{"id":56526,"date":"2026-07-11T01:47:10","date_gmt":"2026-07-11T01:47:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/japan\/56526\/"},"modified":"2026-07-11T01:47:10","modified_gmt":"2026-07-11T01:47:10","slug":"typhoon-bavi-brings-rains-and-wind-to-okinawa-as-taiwan-evacuates-thousands","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/japan\/56526\/","title":{"rendered":"Typhoon Bavi brings rains and wind to Okinawa as Taiwan evacuates thousands"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tokyo\/Taipei \u2013 Typhoon Bavi was passing near Japan\u2019s Sakishima Islands in Okinawa Prefecture on Saturday morning, bringing strong winds and rains to the area, according to the weather agency.<\/p>\n<p>The typhoon, packing maximum sustained winds of 40 meters per second and maximum gusts of 55 meters per second, was moving north-northwest as of 10 a.m. in an area some 90 kilometers from Okinawa\u2019s Miyako Island, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.<\/p>\n<p>While the storm was expected to pass through the area in the afternoon, the agency warned of continued strong winds and rain.<\/p>\n<p>Taiwan\u2019s government, meanwhile, has evacuated more than 14,000 people \u2060from mainly mountainous areas as the island shut down for the medium-strength typhoon, which is expected to bring a deluge of rain and \u200bstrong wind in exposed areas.<\/p>\n<p>While Bavi, which \u200cis gradually \u200cweakening, will not make landfall on \u200bTaiwan, the government is taking all precautions to prevent loss of life, given forecasts for almost 1 meter of rain in some areas.<\/p>\n<p>Most of \u2060those evacuated were in areas in the north and east, with 917 international \u200bflights canceled as well \u2060as all 274 domestic flights.<\/p>\n<p>Almost all cities and counties across Taiwan \u2060declared a typhoon holiday \u200bfor Saturday, closing any offices \u200band schools that may have been open \u200bover \u200cthe weekend.
