{"id":62041,"date":"2026-07-22T03:15:43","date_gmt":"2026-07-22T03:15:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/japan\/62041\/"},"modified":"2026-07-22T03:15:43","modified_gmt":"2026-07-22T03:15:43","slug":"united-japanese-society-of-hawai%ca%bbi-honors-early-japanese-immigrants-at-annual-obon-hoyo-memorial-maui-now","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/japan\/62041\/","title":{"rendered":"United Japanese Society of Hawai\u02bbi honors early Japanese immigrants at annual Obon H\u014dy\u014d memorial : Maui Now"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>   July 21, 2026, 5:00 PM HST  <\/p>\n<p>\n<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/japan\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/obon-hoyo-1-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-531822\"\/>United Japanese Society of Hawai\u02bbi will\u00a0host its annual Obon H\u014dy\u014d memorial service.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As communities across Hawai\u02bbi continue to observe the Obon season, the United Japanese Society of Hawai\u02bbi held its annual Obon H\u014dy\u014d memorial service on Friday morning at Makiki Cemetery, bringing together religious leaders, community leaders, and the public to honor the legacy of Hawai\u02bbi\u2019s earliest Japanese immigrants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The annual ceremony paid tribute to the\u00a0Gannenmono, the first group of Japanese immigrants who arrived in Hawai\u02bbi in 1868, as well as the\u00a0Kanyaku Imin, the government-sponsored immigrants who began arriving in 1885. Their courage, perseverance, and hard work laid the foundation for generations of Japanese Americans and helped shape the social, cultural, and economic fabric of modern Hawai\u02bbi.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Conducted with the assistance of the Hawai\u02bbi Buddhist Council, the memorial service reflected the spirit of Obon\u2014a time to remember and express gratitude to those who came before us. Attendees gathered in solemn remembrance to offer prayers and pay their respects to the pioneers whose sacrifices created opportunities for future generations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service was co-officiated by\u00a0Bishop Takami Inoue\u00a0of the Higashi Hongwanji Mission of Hawai\u02bbi and\u00a0Bishop Toshiyuki Umitani\u00a0of the Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawai\u02bbi, with additional participation by members of the Hawai\u02bbi Buddhist Council.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEach Obon season reminds us of our responsibility to honor those who came before us,\u201d said\u00a0Lynn Araki-Regan, President of the United Japanese Society of Hawai\u02bbi. \u201cThe Gannenmono and Kanyaku Imin demonstrated extraordinary resilience and determination in building new lives in Hawai\u02bbi.
