{"id":62437,"date":"2026-07-22T17:54:16","date_gmt":"2026-07-22T17:54:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/japan\/62437\/"},"modified":"2026-07-22T17:54:16","modified_gmt":"2026-07-22T17:54:16","slug":"chinese-auto-brands-lead-japanese-in-western-europe-vw-suffers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/japan\/62437\/","title":{"rendered":"Chinese Auto Brands Lead Japanese In Western Europe; VW Suffers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" top-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/japan\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1784742856_41_0x0.jpg\" alt=\"Chery Omoda 5 on a street\" data-height=\"1434\" data-width=\"2149\" fetchpriority=\"high\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Chinese sedan and SUV brands, regardless of production location,  edged out Japanese brands in Western Europe during the second quarter for the first time, while during the first six months local manufacturers lost almost three percentage points of market share led by the Volkswagen brand, according to <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.schmidtmatthias.de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.schmidtmatthias.de\/\" aria-label=\"Schmidt Automotive Research\">Schmidt Automotive Research<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p><a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/companies\/TSLA.O\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/companies\/TSLA.O\/\" aria-label=\"Tesla\">Tesla<\/a> was a big gainer.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, European sales in June jumped 13% to 1.38 million, according to Germany\u2019s Dataforce, as electric vehicle sales spurted 52%, inspired by rising prices for gasoline and diesel because of the Iran conflict. <\/p>\n<p>Problems at <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/companies\/VOWG.DE\/ \" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/companies\/VOWG.DE\/\" aria-label=\"Volkswagen\">Volkswagen<\/a> have reminded investors that Europe\u2019s established automakers are in the midst of an existential crisis because of <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/neilwinton\/2026\/07\/18\/chinese-pressure-on-european-automakers-intensifying-as-eu-hesitates\/\" data-ga-track=\"InternalLink:https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/neilwinton\/2026\/07\/18\/chinese-pressure-on-european-automakers-intensifying-as-eu-hesitates\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Chinese competition\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Chinese competition<\/a>, said to be at least 30% ahead in efficiency and leading with EV and plug-in hybrid technology. <\/p>\n<p>Hildegard Mueller, head of the German automotive industry association, <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vda.de\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.vda.de\/en\" aria-label=\"Verband der Automobilindustrie\">Verband der Automobilindustrie<\/a>, recently said job cuts and plant closures are inevitable across the European auto industry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe situation in the whole (European) automotive industry is like the discussion in VW,\u201d Mueller said in an interview with Bloomberg TV, according to Automotive News Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Volkswagen <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/neilwinton\/2026\/07\/12\/vw-reforms-lack-clarity-as-china-threat-accelerates-toyota-not-immune\/\" data-ga-track=\"InternalLink:https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/neilwinton\/2026\/07\/12\/vw-reforms-lack-clarity-as-china-threat-accelerates-toyota-not-immune\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"recently said\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">recently said<\/a> up to 100,000 jobs may have to go, while four German factories could be closed. VW and the unions are currently negotiating about this. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot every production location can be there in the future so there must be programs for restructuring,\u201d Mueller said.  <\/p>\n<p>The European Union acknowledges the crisis and is currently guiding the Industrial Accelerator Act through the European Parliament. The IAA, among other things, wants to incentivize small EV production, decide on some dilution of the rules which demand that all new cars have zero carbon dioxide emissions by 2035 (which effectively means only EVs may apply), and perhaps to include plug-in hybrid electric vehicles in the tariff regime. This currently only applies to Chinese EVs. A \u201cmade in Europe\u201d provision may seek to benefit autos produced locally.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDarwinian\u201d forces at work<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/stefan-bratzel-prof-dr-2b9336\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/stefan-bratzel-prof-dr-2b9336\/\" aria-label=\"Professor Stefan Bratzel\">Professor Stefan Bratzel<\/a>,  director of Germany\u2019s Center of Automotive Management, described the global automotive industry crisis as \u201cDarwinian\u201d, as European, Korean and Japanese manufacturers prospects are thrown into turmoil by Chinese manufacturers. Photographer: Qilai Shen\/Bloomberg<\/p>\n<p>\u00a9 2026 Bloomberg Finance LP<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose who fail to adapt quickly to the new market and technological conditions risk being eliminated in the long run or losing their independence.\u201d Bratzel said in a report.<\/p>\n<p>Non-Chinese manufacturers need to make big productivity gains, reduce complexity, and slash costs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe year 2026 is therefore likely to further accelerate consolidation and restructuring in the global automotive industry,\u201d Bratzel said. <\/p>\n<p>Schmidt Automotive Research said in a report in the second quarter Chinese brands across all fuels outsold Japanese brands for the first time by 352,098 to 350,186. Market share reached 10.7%.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe likes of Toyota, Nissan and Mazda are at risk of falling below 10% market share, something that hasn\u2019t occurred on an annual basis since 1982. Korean brands meanwhile achieved sales of 230,066, with their market share dropping to 7% during the latest quarter,\u201d founder Matt Schmidt said.  <\/p>\n<p>Schmidt cautioned that Chinese sales might have been influenced by technical factors, like sales seeking to pre-empt a possible tariff regime for PHEVs.<\/p>\n<p>VW brand contributed the most<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/company\/saic-motor-corp-ltd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/company\/saic-motor-corp-ltd\/\" aria-label=\"SAIC\">SAIC<\/a>\u2019s MG maintained its position as the number one Sino brand just in front of <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/companies\/002594.SZ\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/companies\/002594.SZ\/\" aria-label=\"BYD\">BYD<\/a>. <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/company\/chery-automobile-co-ltd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/company\/chery-automobile-co-ltd\/\" aria-label=\"Chery\">Chery<\/a> is now just 0.3 percentage points behind the leaders, both of which commanded 2.5% market share so far this year,\u201d Schmidt said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cEuropean brands lost 2.8 percentage points year on year during the opening 6 months, contracting to below two-thirds of the market (65.1%), with VW brand contributing the most to those losses, seeing a 1 percentage point year on year fall in market share and in risk of dipping below 10% share for the first time in over two decades on an annual basis.
