July 23 (UPI) — A Japanese company is responding to the country’s increasingly hot summer temperatures by unveiling a new “human refrigerator.”<\/p>\n

The Do Hiemon Box, marketed as a<\/a> “human refrigerator,” is roughly the size of a standard Japanese vending machine and can fit one person inside at a time.\n<\/p>\n

The temperature inside the box<\/a> is kept at 59 degrees, and once a person is inside, cold air is blasted at their head, neck, shoulders and back.<\/p>\n

The box, developed by refrigeration and vending machine manufacturer SDRS, is marketed by industrial equipment supplier Trusco Nakayama for use at business and other public spaces amid the summer heat.<\/p>\n

The company said the boxes can help relieve symptoms of heat exhaustion by rapidly cooling bodies. It is being marketed for places where people<\/a> work outside, such as construction sites.<\/p>\n

Maebashi City Hall in Gunma Prefecture received one of the first boxes as a donation, and members of the public are being allowed to use it for free during opening hours.<\/p>\n

Temperatures across Japan have been rising to nearly 100 degrees in recent weeks. A total 48 people were hospitalized with heatstroke in Tokyo on a single day, July 15.\n<\/p>\n
