The debate raises the question as to whether such excessive work zeal and extreme devotion to wakefulness sets a bad example for the public. For some, however, it is more of a smokescreen to mask Takaichi\u2019s low popularity ratings and, also, the scandal of an alleged smear campaign against her internal rivals in the race for the party presidency.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cSince July began, I have stayed shut in the official residence on weekends, painstakingly going over mountains of documents from first thing in the morning until late at night,\u201d begins the long text uploaded July 20 to the prime minister\u2019s account on X, which is followed by 2.9 million users.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The first woman to lead Japan\u2019s executive branch explains how her little free time in the afternoons is spent doing laundry, cleaning the bathroom, washing dishes, mending the hem of her skirts and reinforcing loose buttons on her jackets. She says she uses the early hours of the morning to catch up on stacks of official documents. One comes from a woman who uses a wheelchair and describes her own exhausting routine as a company employee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The woman paraphrases one of Takaichi\u2019s famous slogans (\u201cWork, work, work, work\u2026\u201d) and adds that, despite having no secretaries or drivers, she quietly pays the taxes that politicians \u201cdecide as they please.\u201d She concludes: \u201cWhen I see posts like hers I can\u2019t help but think: Isn\u2019t that common sense?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Another X user lashes out at the prime minister for boasting about \u201cworking without sleeping\u201d and calls her account of long days \u201cpathetic.\u201d \u201cIs she trying to make us forget the Imperial Household Law?\u201d the user asks, referring to the recent reform that leaves women excluded from the line of succession to the Japanese throne despite <a href=\"https:\/\/english.elpais.com\/international\/2025-12-04\/growing-popularity-of-princess-aiko-reopens-the-debate-on-male-imperial-succession-in-japan.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/english.elpais.com\/international\/2025-12-04\/growing-popularity-of-princess-aiko-reopens-the-debate-on-male-imperial-succession-in-japan.html\">popular support for Princess Aiko<\/a>, the only child of the current monarchs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Many users advise Takaichi to hire someone to help with household chores and to focus on delivering better results as a leader. \u201cYou are approving draft laws that have nothing to do with the lives of citizens suffering from a weak yen and rising prices,\u201d one writes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">A cartoon of the prime minister sweating while ironing her clothes, published on another account, alludes to Takaichi\u2019s dwindling popularity. \u201cSince my approval ratings are plunging, I wash the dishes and iron and thereby win people\u2019s sympathy,\u201d the caption accompanying the drawing sarcastically reads.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Takaichi\u2019s cabinet, which after her landslide victory in February\u2019s legislative elections hovered at around 70% approval, has registered continuous monthly declines and now stands at 41%, according to a Mainichi Shimbun survey carried out between July 19 and July 20.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The most cutting and awkward comment refers to the scandal surrounding Takeshi Kinoshita, Takaichi\u2019s aide. According to an investigative report, the prime minister\u2019s office used AI-generated videos to discredit rivals in the 2025 contest for the presidency of the governing Liberal Democratic Party (LDP).<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cIs this a justification to evade parliament and avoid accountability? Among the rivals affected are Shinjiro Koizumi, the current defense minister, and Yoshimasa Hayashi, the minister of internal affairs and communications.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Opposition parties have rejected the document and again demanded the aide\u2019s appearance.
