{"id":68698,"date":"2026-08-04T05:31:51","date_gmt":"2026-08-04T05:31:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/japan\/68698\/"},"modified":"2026-08-04T05:31:51","modified_gmt":"2026-08-04T05:31:51","slug":"yen-clings-to-gains-from-us-japan-currency-intervention-as-traders-stay-alert-to-more","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/japan\/68698\/","title":{"rendered":"Yen clings to gains from US-Japan currency intervention as traders stay alert to more"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Published Tue, Aug 4, 2026 \u00b7 08:23 AM \u2014 Updated Tue, Aug 4, 2026 \u00b7 10:13 AM<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">[SINGAPORE] The yen held on to most of its intervention-driven gains on Tuesday (Aug 4), after <a class=\"text-verticals-btblue underline hover:text-blue-500\" data-testid=\"article-annotation-link-component\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businesstimes.com.sg\/international\/global\/japan-and-us-confirm-joint-yen-buying-intervention-signal-more-action\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">last week\u2019s joint action by Tokyo and Washington<\/a> to shore up the currency kept speculators wary of rebuilding bearish positions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">The yen weakened slightly in early Asia trade and was down 0.1 per cent at 157.35 per US dollar, having touched a three-month high of 155.20 in the previous session, though it remained well above its 40-year low.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">The yen slipped 0.06 per cent against the Singapore dollar to 122.94 yen per Singapore dollar in early Tuesday trading.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">The Japanese currency had surged as much as 5 per cent <a class=\"text-verticals-btblue underline hover:text-blue-500\" data-testid=\"article-annotation-link-component\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businesstimes.com.sg\/companies-markets\/capital-markets-currencies\/yen-climbs-third-straight-session-after-japan-us-intervention\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">over the last three trading sessions,<\/a> with Japan confirming coordinated yen-buying intervention on Friday with the US in a rare move.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">\u201cI expect concerns about the possibility of further intervention by Japanese and US authorities (to) constrain downside pressure on the yen in the near term,\u201d said Tomo Kinoshita, global market strategist for Japan at Invesco.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">\u201cI believe that the yen is likely to appreciate against the US dollar towards the end of this year&#8230; PM (Sanae) Takaichi\u2019s stimulus policy agenda has contributed to weakness in the yen but the market seems to have already priced in major elements of Takaichi\u2019s policy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Against the euro, the yen held near a more than eight-month top and last stood at 181.19, while sterling bought 211.60 yen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Monday\u2019s sudden surge in the yen stirred speculation that Japanese authorities had intervened again, though officials offered no confirmation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Analysts at Citi said trading volumes in dollar\/yen hit roughly US$27 billion in the early morning window on Monday, compared with the recent averages of US$1.9 billion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-6 border-b border-gray-250 pb-4 font-poppins text-4xs font-medium tracking-10 text-gray-515\">SEE ALSO<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"block h-full w-full\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businesstimes.com.sg\/international\/global\/buy-japanese-yen-jpy-5-10-bil-us-treasury-secretary-bessent-joins-us-japan-bid-lift-yen?ref=article-see-also\" data-discover=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"relative z-10 h-full w-full object-cover\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/japan\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/34aa98d32e9e674773664fb5e062215574ea6ad9100805e56963a5e3565f53fa.webp\" alt=\"Bessent (centre) initially generated headlines by saying in a media interview that the yen is \u201cvery undervalued\u201d and \u201cexcess volatility\u201d isn\u2019t healthy.\u00a0\" width=\"5483\" height=\"3655\"\/><\/a>US dollar takes a breather<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">The US dollar, meanwhile, was nursing losses, having slid in the wake of the yen-buying intervention and on the back of falling oil prices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">US President Donald Trump said on Monday that talks with Iran were under way, <a class=\"text-verticals-btblue underline hover:text-blue-500\" data-testid=\"article-annotation-link-component\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businesstimes.com.sg\/international\/trump-says-talks-are-irans-last-chance-after-threats\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">warning that it was a \u201clast chance\u201d<\/a> for Teheran to sign a good deal to end the five-month-old war, but Iran denied that any negotiations were being held or planned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Against the greenback, the euro was little changed at US$1.1511, having hit a 1\u00bd-month peak of US$1.1559 in the previous session, while sterling slipped 0.06 per cent to US$1.3427.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">The US dollar index bounced from a 1\u00bd-month low to 99.98.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Investors had sold the US dollar after the <a class=\"text-verticals-btblue underline hover:text-blue-500\" data-testid=\"article-annotation-link-component\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businesstimes.com.sg\/international\/global\/after-keeping-rates-intact-feds-warsh-shifts-focus-back-lowering-inflation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">US Federal Reserve kept rates on hold on Jul 29,<\/a> with its losses accelerating following the yen intervention.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">\u201cWe consider market participants overreacted by selling the USD in response to the Fed\u2019s decision to keep the funds rate unchanged. US interest rates are going to be increased, but not on the markets\u2019 short timeframe,\u201d said Joseph Capurso, a strategist at Commonwealth Bank of Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">\u201cThis week\u2019s non-farm payrolls for July is a key input into the timing of the eventual tightening cycle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Markets are currently pricing in roughly 35 basis points worth of US Fed rate hikes by December, with the focus turning to Friday\u2019s jobs report.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6 inline-block\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">In other currencies, the Australian dollar edged 0.04 per cent higher to US$0.7003, while the New Zealand dollar fell 0.1 per cent to US$0.5867.
