{"id":68762,"date":"2026-08-04T08:06:07","date_gmt":"2026-08-04T08:06:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/japan\/68762\/"},"modified":"2026-08-04T08:06:07","modified_gmt":"2026-08-04T08:06:07","slug":"japans-toyota-reports-hefty-profit-on-cheap-yen-car-sales","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/japan\/68762\/","title":{"rendered":"Japan&#8217;s Toyota reports hefty profit on cheap yen, car sales"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>TOKYO (AP) \u2014 Toyota reported Tuesday a nearly doubling of profit for the fiscal first quarter as solid demand in the U.S. and India combined with <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/currency-markets\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a favorable exchange rate<\/a> to boost results.<\/p>\n<p>The Japanese automaker, which makes the Prius hybrid and Lexus luxury models, recorded a 1.48 trillion yen ($9.4 billion) net profit in the April-June period, up from 841 billion yen the same quarter the previous year.<\/p>\n<p>Quarterly sales rose 10% year on year to 13.5 trillion yen ($85 billion).<\/p>\n<p>A cheap yen raises the value of overseas earnings for Japan\u2019s giant exporters like <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/toyota-motor-corp\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Toyota Motor Corp.<\/a> The U.S. dollar was trading at about 145 yen during the fiscal first quarter in 2025, but at about 160 yen for the same period this year. <\/p>\n<p>The dollar is now trading at about 158 yen because of a joint U.S.-Japan market intervention, which came last week, or in the fiscal second quarter.<\/p>\n<p>The favorable currency effect added 345 billion yen ($2.2 billion) to Toyota\u2019s quarterly operating profit in the April-June period.<\/p>\n<p>The automaker is figuring the yen at 160 to the dollar for the full fiscal year.<\/p>\n<p>Chief Officer Takanori Azuma said Toyota sold fewer vehicles globally for the quarter just ended at 2.39 million, compared with 2.41 million vehicles a year ago.<\/p>\n<p>But the automaker expects to sell more vehicles for the full fiscal year at 9.7 million vehicles, compared with 9.595 million the previous fiscal year. <\/p>\n<p>Azuma said demand remains strong for <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/7e88833119934a928328eda335c7fb18\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Toyota hybrids<\/a> in various global markets, including the U.S., where the Camry mid-size sedan and RAV4 compact sport utility vehicle are selling briskly.<\/p>\n<p>Toyota plans to boost hybrid and hybrid battery production through 2030, said Azuma, adding that it will bring down costs. Toyota\u2019s electric vehicle sales are also going strong, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Among the popular models in India were the Urban Cruiser and Innova Hycross, while the Yaris remained a strong seller in Thailand and Europe. <\/p>\n<p>The recent political instability in the Middle East has weighed on <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/japan-automakers-nissan-china-iran-profit-df38eae77630b933d5b8b058e7094b73\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Japanese automakers<\/a>, which rely heavily on the now effectively closed <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/strait-of-hormuz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Strait of Hormuz<\/a> for shipping.
