Tokyo, August 4, 2026 \u2013 The Japanese government is presenting an accelerated buildup of defense capabilities not only as a means of protecting the country, but also as a path to greater economic prosperity, according to a new defense white paper that states weapons production could support economic growth.<\/p>\n
The annual assessment of threats from neighboring countries \u2013 China, Russia and North Korea \u2013 calls on Japan, which has been constrained by postwar limits for many decades, to make use of technology, support startups and incorporate more commercial components into weapons production.<\/p>\n

Beijing reacted sharply in November to Takaichi\u2019s comments about the possible deployment of Japan\u2019s Self-Defense Forces in response to a Chinese attack on Taiwan that threatened the country\u2019s existence, and demanded the withdrawal of what it called an \u201coutrageously provocative\u201d statement.<\/p>\n
Tokyo assembled a package of tax increases, spending reforms and one-off revenues to finance the largest defense buildup since World War II, raising defense spending to 2% of GDP. However, Takaichi has yet to clearly explain how she plans to finance further expansion without placing additional pressure on already strained public finances.<\/p>\n
The government also approved a record annual budget of 122.3 trillion yen for the year ending in March 2027, and later added 3.1 trillion yen in a supplementary package to cushion households and businesses from rising energy costs, highlighting the competing demands on the state budget.<\/p>\n
Most of the new defense spending so far has been directed toward long-range missile systems, while further increases are expected to focus in part on drones and other uncrewed weapons, which Ukraine has widely used in its war with Russia.<\/p>\n
