Sydney \u2013 The environmental regulator in Australia\u2019s Northern Territory charged Japanese energy giant Inpex in court on Wednesday with under-reporting emissions from its Ichthys liquefied natural \u200bgas (LNG) plant near Darwin.<\/p>\n
The charges cover \u200calleged license \u200cbreaches, such as the under-reporting of \u200bbenzene and toluene emissions between 2019 and 2024, the Northern Territory Environment Protection Authority said.<\/p>\n
It gave \u2060no further details, saying the matter was in \u2060court. Inpex did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n
The charges follow \u200ban October disclosure by \u2060Inpex of significant under-reporting of emissions at the plant, which prompted a \u2060regulatory review \u200bof operations at the facilities \u200bof both Ichthys LNG and Santos\u2019 Darwin \u200bLNG.<\/p>\n
The \u200cenvironmental license from the regulator requires regular annual reports from Inpex on total air emissions.<\/p>\n
The review made 23 recommendations, endorsed by \u200cthe regulator in July, for tougher rules at both LNG facilities, such as installment of continuous emissions monitoring equipment at major emission sources.<\/p>\n
The regulator \u200bwill \u200bdraft amendments to existing licenses this month \u200breflecting the changes.<\/p>\n
Climate group Environment Centre \u2060NT called the decision to charge Inpex a \u201cmassive win for Darwin residents.\u201d<\/p>\n
