The United Arab Emirates\u2019 sovereign wealth fund Mubadala Investment Company is reportedly considering investing up to \u00a51 trillion ($6.3 billion) in an AI-focused data center project in northern Japan.<\/p>\n

Mubadala is expected to lead the financing for the 500-megawatt facility in Akita Prefecture and may bring in additional domestic and international investors given the project\u2019s scale. Total investment could reach \u00a52 trillion ($12.6 billion), making it Japan\u2019s largest data center once completed.<\/p>\n

The project comes as Japan accelerates investment in AI and digital infrastructure to meet growing demand for computing capacity. Earlier this year, NTT Data announced plans to invest at least \u00a51.5 trillion ($9.6 billion) through 2033 to expand its domestic data center footprint, increasing capacity by about 750 megawatts, bringing it to 1 gigawatt.<\/p>\n

For Mubadala, the Akita development would mark its first direct investment in a Japanese data center. The Abu Dhabi fund has built a global digital infrastructure portfolio through investments in operators including Cologix, Princeton Digital Group, GlobalConnect, Aligned Data Centers, and Yondr Group.<\/p>\n
