TOKYO\/BEIJING \u2013 Typhoon Dolphin lashed Japan\u2019s Okinawa Prefecture on Saturday, injuring five people and cutting power to 14,000 buildings, while China shut ports and ferry routes ahead of \u200bthe storm\u2019s expected arrival on its east coast.<\/p>\n
The storm was about 160 kilometers \u200cnorthwest of Kume Island in Okinawa as of noon, moving \u200bnorthwest at 15 kph, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.<\/p>\n
Five elderly people suffered non-life-threatening injuries, with three falling due to the wind, the Okinawa Prefectural Government said. Domestic airlines, \u2060ANA and Japan Airlines, canceled flights to the region.<\/p>\n
The typhoon had maximum sustained winds of 162 \u2060kph with gusts reaching 216 kph.<\/p>\n
Okinawa and Amami island in Kagoshima Prefecture are the main areas expected to be affected in Japan.<\/p>\n
The China \u200bNational Meteorological Centrer said Typhoon Dolphin was \u2060expected to make landfall along China\u2019s eastern and southern coast between late Sunday and early Monday, most likely between Zhoushan city \u2060in Zhejiang province \u200band Fuding city in Fujian province.<\/p>\n
It is expected to bring \u200bwinds of 38-45 meters per second near its center.<\/p>\n
Rain and \u200bstrong winds \u200care expected to affect eastern China through Aug. 12, including parts of Shanghai and neighboring provinces. Some areas of eastern Zhejiang could receive more than 600 millimeters of rain, according to forecasters.<\/p>\n
Zhejiang raised its coastal typhoon alert to \u200cits highest level, halted port operations and suspended 162 passenger ferry routes.<\/p>\n
Ningbo Lishe International Airport in Zhejiang said it will halt operations from 11:30 p.m. on Saturday and suspend all flights on Sunday. Shanghai\u2019s Yangshan port had been cleared of vessels by late Friday, while some \u200brail \u200bservices in the Yangtze River Delta will be suspended from Sunday.<\/p>\n
In \u200bTaiwan, 63 international flights were canceled because of the typhoon, the government said. Heavy rain \u2060was expected in northern parts of the island over the weekend, though authorities had not ordered evacuations as of Saturday.<\/p>\n
China has ordered that, due to the typhoon, ships passing through the Taiwan Strait must heed its traffic control instructions \u2014 measures that \u200bTaipei denounced as \u201cridiculous\u201c, saying that Beijing has no right to restrict access to international waters.<\/p>\n
China, which views democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory, also claims the strategic strait.
