Photo by Nicholas Doherty<\/a> on Unsplash<\/a> Taisei Corp., Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings and Hokkaido Electric Power said on Aug. 17 that their proposal for technology development aimed at lowering costs through the design, manufacturing and maintenance of concrete floating structures had been selected for a project solicited by Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization, or NEDO.<\/p>\n The project falls under NEDO’s demonstration research program for next-generation floating offshore wind power systems, which is intended to support broader deployment of floating offshore wind. The three companies will carry out manufacturing verification tests for concrete semi-submersible floaters, assess the effects of combined deterioration and evaluate the applicability of crack-monitoring methods using optical fiber sensing.<\/p>\n The work builds on an earlier NEDO-commissioned project in fiscal 2024 and 2025 on a compact full-concrete semi-submersible floater and deepwater mooring technology. In that program, the companies conducted development and evaluation work on issues including floater design, mass-production technology, mooring, quality assurance, long-term durability, inspection and maintenance.<\/p>\n Under the new project, Taisei will handle demonstration tests intended to support the formulation of guidelines for manufacturing concrete floaters, TEPCO Holdings will assess the effects of combined deterioration in concrete floaters, and Hokkaido Electric will evaluate the use of optical fiber sensing for crack detection. The project is scheduled to run from July 2026 to March 2028.<\/p>\n A concrete semi-submersible floater is a semi-submersible floating foundation that uses concrete for structural members. The manufacturing verification test is expected to simulate a column ring produced with a precast construction method. Combined deterioration refers to the progression of concrete degradation through the interaction of fatigue caused by repeated loading from waves and other forces and the penetration of chloride ions from seawater. Optical fiber sensing uses fiber-optic cables as sensors to measure physical parameters including strain, temperature, pressure and vibration.<\/p>\n Japan’s government has positioned offshore wind as a key power source in its push to maximize renewable energy deployment and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
