The companies said the partnership is also intended to support more efficient collection of real-world data needed for AI development and help establish a domestic industrial base for humanoid robots.

The partnership has two main areas of cooperation. First, the companies will jointly test actuators developed by NSK for humanoid robots by installing them in Atom’s machines. Knowledge gained from real-machine evaluation will be used in NSK’s product development to improve the performance of domestically produced actuators and accelerate work toward mass production.

Second, the companies will jointly collect physical AI data using NSK manufacturing sites and Atom’s humanoid robots. By using data derived from actual production environments, the partners aim to improve physical AI foundation models and develop robots capable of carrying out advanced tasks required in manufacturing processes.

NSK is a Tokyo-based precision parts maker that traces its origins to 1916, when it produced Japan’s first bearing. The company expanded overseas from the early 1960s and now has operations in about 30 countries. It is the world’s third-largest bearing maker.

NSK has been developing actuators that support flexible robot movement based on tribology technologies built through its bearing and ball screw businesses. Atom, based in Tokyo’s Koto Ward and established in November 2025, develops both a bipedal humanoid robot with two arms and a physical AI foundation model responsible for environmental recognition, decision-making and action generation.

Japan has long had a strong industrial robot sector, but much of that market has focused on fixed, task-specific equipment used in factories. Humanoid robot development has drawn increased attention globally as companies seek machines that can operate in spaces designed for humans and perform a wider range of physical tasks.

The two companies positioned the partnership as part of a broader effort to support the development of Japan’s humanoid robot industry and said they plan to work with a wide range of industries to help domestically made humanoids compete in global markets.

KEY POINTSNSK and Atom sign an August 20 MOU on Japan-made humanoid AI robotsPartnership covers actuator testing on…

[2
36080,49840,49841,885,8,38155,1064,1615
post-77707","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-japan","tag-actuators","tag-atom","tag-bearings","tag-humanoid-robots","tag-japan","tag-nsk","tag-physical-ai","tag-robotics
["GET
