There was no tsunami threat.

The quake disrupted transport, triggered emergency alerts on mobile phones and caused limited damage, including a burst underground water pipe and temporary power cuts in parts of Tokyo. The government set up a task force to assess any damage.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the earthquake occurred in southern Ibaraki prefecture at a depth of 70 kilometres, in an area that is prone to frequent quakes. The United States Geological Survey recorded a preliminary magnitude of 5.8.

The Fire and Disaster Management Agency said at least five people were injured in Ibaraki, Chiba and Saitama prefectures, northeast of Tokyo. It said more people were injured and details were being investigated.

The quake led to delays on express trains serving Tokyo and Narita Airport, as well as other local train services in northeastern regions. However, Shinkansen bullet trains were running normally, according to East Japan Railway Company.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said on X that the government had set up a task force to assess the extent of possible damage. NHK public television showed traffic on roads in nearby cities, including Mito and Saitama, appearing normal despite the strong shaking felt in Tokyo.

NHK footage also showed water pouring onto a road in Tokyo’s eastern Koto ward after an underground water pipe ruptured. The earthquake caused blackouts in about 460 homes in Tokyo, but TEPCO Power Grid said power had been restored by later on Sunday morning.

The Nuclear Regulation Authority said there were no reports of anomalies at about a dozen nuclear power plants and other facilities handling nuclear materials. Last month, a magnitude 7.1 earthquake hit the Kumamoto area on the southernmost island of Kyushu, killing 38 people, injuring 364, destroying more than 1,500 buildings and damaging nearly 20,000 others.

In sum, the earthquake shook eastern Japan and the Tokyo area, caused injuries and transport delays, and led to limited infrastructure damage, while officials said there was no tsunami threat or problems at nuclear facilities.

With PTI Inputs

– Ends

Published By:

India Today Web Desk

Published On:

Aug 23, 2026 07:04 IST

A moderate earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.9 struck eastern Japan, including the Tokyo area, early on…

[3
20494,50389,8,3276,50401,50400,50403,52,29971,50402,50399
post-78660","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-tokyo","tag-5-9-magnitude-quake","tag-ibaraki-earthquake","tag-japan","tag-japan-earthquake","tag-koto-ward-water-pipe-burst","tag-no-tsunami-threat","tag-nuclear-facilities-safe","tag-tokyo","tag-tokyo-earthquake","tag-tokyo-power-outage","tag-tokyo-transport-delays
["GET
