\n TOKYO (Kyodo) — Tokyo stocks were mixed Monday morning, as the broader market was supported by stronger-than-expected U.S. economic data released late last week, while the tech-heavy Nikkei stock index was pressured by chip-related selling. \n<\/p>\n


\n The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average fell 47.65 points, or 0.07 percent, from Friday to 65,968.71. The broader Topix index was up 13.01 points, or 0.32 percent, at 4,080.30. \n<\/p>\n


\n The U.S. dollar traded mostly in the upper 158 yen range in Tokyo, amid a wait-and-see mood ahead of the expected announcement of new sanctions on Iran by the United States. \n<\/p>\n


\n At noon, the dollar fetched 158.88-89 yen compared with 158.94-159.04 yen in New York and 158.82-84 yen in Tokyo at 5 p.m. Friday. \n<\/p>\n


\n The euro was quoted at $1.1682-1682 and 185.60-61 yen against $1.1671-1681 and 185.58-68 yen in New York and $1.1690-1692 and 185.67-71 yen in Tokyo late Friday afternoon. \n<\/p>\n


\n The broader market was supported by gains on Wall Street late last week following a stronger-than-expected S&P Global Purchasing Managers’ Index for August, which eased concerns over an economic slowdown. \n<\/p>\n


\n Meanwhile, the benchmark Nikkei index remained around the previous trading day’s closing level, as investors locked in gains after reports that Nvidia Corp. had notified customers of price hikes for its chips, despite expectations that the broader trend of AI development would remain unchanged, dealers said. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" This photo shows the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
