(Mainichi)

TOKYO (Kyodo) — Tokyo stocks ended mixed Monday, buoyed by stronger-than-expected U.S. economic data while a decline in South Korea’s benchmark index and profit-taking weighed on the tech-heavy Nikkei index.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended down 488.27 points, or 0.74 percent, from Friday at 65,528.09. The broader Topix index finished 6.00 points, or 0.15 percent, higher at 4,073.29.

On the top-tier Prime Market, the main gainers were service and construction issues, while mining, and information and communication shares were notable decliners.

The U.S. dollar traded mostly in the upper 158 yen range in Tokyo, amid a wait-and-see mood ahead of the expected announcement of new sanctions on Iran by the United States.

At 5 p.m., the dollar fetched 159.15-17 yen compared with 158.94-159.04 yen in New York and 158.82-84 yen in Tokyo at 5 p.m. Friday.

The euro was quoted at $1.1666-1668 and 185.67-71 yen against $1.1671-1681 and 185.58-68 yen in New York and $1.1690-1692 and 185.67-71 yen in Tokyo late Friday afternoon.

The yield on the benchmark 10-year Japanese government bond ended up 0.005 percentage point from Friday’s close at 2.880 percent on concerns over the Middle East tension.

Investors stayed on the sidelines ahead of Nvidia Corp.’s earnings release later in the week and the Jackson Hole economic symposium in Wyoming, at which U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh is set to deliver a speech.

“The beginning of the week tends to be directionless as major events are concentrated later in the week,” said Shota Sando, equity market analyst at the Tokai Tokyo Intelligence Laboratory Co.

The Topix index was supported by gains on Wall Street late last week following a stronger-than-expected S&P Global Purchasing Managers’ Index for August that eased concerns over an economic slowdown.

Meanwhile, the benchmark Nikkei index mostly traded in negative territory, as investors locked in gains on some technology shares after reports that Nvidia had notified customers of price hikes for its chips, despite expectations that the trend of AI development will remain unchanged, dealers said.

Losses in South Korea’s tech-heavy Kospi index, which closed down over 3 percent, also weighed on the Nikkei index, they said.

This Oct. 1, 2020 file photo shows the Tokyo Stock…

[3
217,3492,8,186,187,52
post-79358","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-tokyo","tag-business","tag-financial","tag-japan","tag-latest-articles","tag-the-mainichi","tag-tokyo
["GET
