Japanese<\/a> artist Yayoi Kusama<\/a>, who splashed her signature polka dots on paintings, sculptures<\/a> and museum installations around the world, has died, her company said Thursday. She was 97.<\/p>\n

The announcement made on her official website said \u200bshe died on 14 August but did \u200bnot give a cause of death.<\/p>\n

Kusama, one of Japan’s most respected contemporary artists<\/a>, was widely exhibited around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art<\/a> and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Repetitive motifs were her trademark, in various shapes, resembling netting, swirls or worms, but most often dots, dancing proudly on her canvases, or as sparkling balls or dots of light in her installations, in all their vibrant psychedelic glory.<\/p>\n

Frustrated with \u2060the confining nature of Japanese society, Kusama \u200bleft for New York at 27, where she \u200bquickly made a name for herself with her paintings, inspired by hallucinations of flashing lights, dots and flowers she \u200bhad seen since childhood.<\/p>\n

She also wrote, took \u200bpart in anti-war activities during the 1960s, and reportedly influenced \u200cartists \u2060such as Andy Warhol.<\/p>\n

Kusama, who was candid about her mental health struggles, said New York gave her neuroses.<\/p>\n

Around 1977, a few years after \u200breturning to \u200bJapan, she \u2060voluntarily entered a mental hospital and lived there for decades, being driven \u200bto her nearby studio each morning.<\/p>\n

“I \u200bstill \u2060see hallucinations even now,” Kusama said in 2017.<\/p>\n

“Dots come flying everywhere \u2013 on my dress, the floor, \u2060things \u200bI’m carrying, throughout the house, \u200bthe ceiling. And I paint them.”<\/p>\n
