{"id":8112,"date":"2026-04-19T18:27:05","date_gmt":"2026-04-19T18:27:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/japan\/8112\/"},"modified":"2026-04-19T18:27:05","modified_gmt":"2026-04-19T18:27:05","slug":"astet-studio-references-tokyo-izakayas-at-mitsu-restaurant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/japan\/8112\/","title":{"rendered":"Astet Studio references Tokyo izakayas at Mitsu restaurant"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Contemporary Shoji screens and hanging fabrics have been used to evoke Tokyo izakayas at the Mitsu\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/japanese-restaurants\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Japanese restaurant<\/a>\u00a0in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/london\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">London<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The recently opened <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/restaurants\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">restaurant<\/a> in Shoreditch, east London, was designed by Barcelona-based <a href=\"https:\/\/astetstudio.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Astet Studio<\/a> to reflect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/japan\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Japan<\/a>&#8216;s\u00a0street culture and urban nightlife.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2317281 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/japan\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/mitsu-restaurant-studio-aste-shoreditch-london-interiors_dezeen_2364_col_11.jpg\" alt=\"Dining space with red panels \" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"  loading=\"lazy\"\/>Astet Studio has created contemporary shoji screens for the space<\/p>\n<p>In particular, the studio wanted to create the feel of an izakaya \u2013 a type of informal Japanese bar.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our intention was for the restaurant to be perceived as an izakaya tavern that has evolved over the years: a lived-in and warm space, yet still with a vibrant energy,&#8221; Astet Studio co-founder Ala Zreigat told Dezeen.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2317287 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/japan\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/mitsu-restaurant-studio-aste-shoreditch-london-interiors_dezeen_2364_col_0.jpg\" alt=\"Exterior of Mitsu Japanese restaurant\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1573\"  loading=\"lazy\"\/>Guests enter Mitsu through a courtyard garden resembling a Tsuboniwa<\/p>\n<p>The exterior of Mitsu features concrete panels resembling the charred and aged Yakisugi, an ancient Japanese technique for preserving wood.<\/p>\n<p>Guests arrive through an outdoor area referencing a Tsuboniwa, a Japanese courtyard <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/gardens\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">garden<\/a>, into a corridor of LED arches, through to the main <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/bars\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bar<\/a> area, where ceiling-height drapes and a blackened steel structure create the illusion of a floating bar.<\/p>\n<p>The eight-metre-long hand-painted fabrics above the bar area, featuring sake motifs, are a nod to Noren, a traditional fabric that hangs above the entrances of izakaya&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Suspended above the diners, these fabric pieces create an enveloping micro-space that expands and contracts within the interior,&#8221; said Astet Studio co-founder Oscar Engroba.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2317293 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/japan\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/mitsu-restaurant-studio-aste-shoreditch-london-interiors_dezeen_2364_col_6.jpg\" alt=\"bar area of Mitsu restaurant \" width=\"2364\" height=\"1573\"  loading=\"lazy\"\/>Astet Studio designed Mitsu to reflect the energy of East Tokyo<\/p>\n<p>Astet Studio used both Japanese cultural references and urban design elements to blend the restaurant&#8217;s cuisine with its vibrant east London setting.<\/p>\n<p>Traditional shoji screens, reinterpreted as large backlit panels integrated into the walls and above dining booths, radiate a soft red glow across the dining spaces.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2317273 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/japan\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/mitsu-restaurant-studio-aste-shoreditch-square.png\" alt=\"Dining space at Mitsu restaurant\" width=\"1080\" height=\"1080\"  loading=\"lazy\"\/>Each dining table features a miniature rice paper lamp<\/p>\n<p>Inspired by the Japanese concept of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Utsuroi\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Utsuroi<\/a>, adaptive lighting and blinds have been used across the space to transition the restaurant from day to night.<\/p>\n<p>The colour red forms a theme across the restaurant, evoking the vivid street lamps and signage across Tokyo at night.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The evolving intensity and colour temperature of light recall the atmosphere of Tokyo\u2019s streets at night, where neon signs tint the city in constantly shifting hues,&#8221; Zreigat said.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2026\/04\/07\/keiji-ashizawa-loca-niru-restaurant-singapore\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/japan\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/loca-niru-restaurant-keiji-ashizawa-singapore_dezeen_2364_col_sq1-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Loca Niru restaurant\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p> Keiji Ashizawa envisions Loca Niru restaurant as &#8220;a dialogue across time&#8221;\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The restaurant also houses a selection of Japanese design pieces and collectables, including Kokeshi dolls, records, ceramics and Taru, traditional sake barrels.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The aim was to preserve the informal character of an izakaya, as if the place had always existed in that location,&#8221;
