{"id":84545,"date":"2026-09-02T12:24:08","date_gmt":"2026-09-02T12:24:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/japan\/84545\/"},"modified":"2026-09-02T12:24:08","modified_gmt":"2026-09-02T12:24:08","slug":"berkshire-ceo-says-japanese-bond-yields-not-a-challenge-for-trading-houses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/japan\/84545\/","title":{"rendered":"Berkshire CEO says Japanese bond yields not a challenge for trading houses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"InlineVideo-videoThumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/japan\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/108357589-17883463401788346336-48131531476-1080pnbcnews.jpg\" alt=\"Berkshire CEO Greg Abel: Multi-decade high Japanese bond yields not a challenge for major trading houses right now\"\/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/BRK.B\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Berkshire Hathaway&#8217;s<\/a> CEO Greg Abel said that rising yields in Japan isn&#8217;t impacting the major trading houses in the country the holding company has stakes in.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In an appearance on CNBC&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/squawk-box-us\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Squawk Box<\/a>&#8221; on Wednesday, Abel said that while high yields are topical in Japan \u2014 with the nation&#8217;s 10-year bond yield <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/09\/01\/bond-yields-iran-inflation-treasurys-japan-uk.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hitting a 30-year high this week<\/a> \u2014 it&#8217;s manageable, at least for major trading firms in the country.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Not a single one of the trading companies raised it as a fundamental challenge right now,&#8221; he said. &#8220;They&#8217;re still relatively modest when you think about it,&#8221; Abel added, noting that Japan&#8217;s yields, while at multi-decade highs, are still low relatively to other bond yields across the world.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While Japan&#8217;s multi-decade high in its 10-year bond yield is just above 3%, the U.S. 10-year Treasury Yield hit an almost three-year high on Tuesday when it crossed 4.8%.<\/p>\n<p>Stock Chart IconStock chart icon<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static-redesign.cnbcfm.com\/dist\/a54b41835a8b60db28c2.svg\" class=\"Collapsible-dismissButton\" alt=\"hide content\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Japan bond yield in 2026<\/p>\n<p>Berkshire Hathaway has a greater than 10% stake in five of Japan&#8217;s largest trading houses \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/8001.T-JP\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Itochu<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/8002.T-JP\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Marubeni<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/8058.T-JP\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mitsubishi<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/8031.T-JP\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mitsui<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/8053.T-JP\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sumitomo<\/a> \u2014 which deal with everything from energy to consumer goods. Abel was visiting Tokyo, which included checking in with those five firms along with Berkshire&#8217;s other investments in the country.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Abel added that he expects Berkshire will still raise debt as appropriate in yen, despite the high yields. <\/p>\n<p>The investments in the trading houses were originally made under a guarantee that Berkshire would never take double-digit stakes in any of the five.
