Torrential rain has been pummeling many areas of eastern Japan, including Tokyo, Kanagawa and Chiba prefectures. Downpours are expected to hit many more areas starting on Monday.<\/p>\n
Weather officials are urging people to stay on high alert for mudslides, overflowing rivers and floods in low-lying areas.<\/p>\n
The Japan Meteorological Agency says a seasonal rain front, which is currently extending just south of the country’s main island of Honshu, is moving north.<\/p>\n
Radar analysis indicates that about 80 millimeters of rain was recorded in and near Mikurajima Village in the Izu Islands during a one-hour period through 8 p.m. on Sunday.<\/p>\n
A Level 4 Urgent Warning for heavy rain was in place for Chiba City, as of earle Monday morning.<\/p>\n
A Level 4 Urgent Warning for landslides was in effect for most of the Izu Islands, some parts of Kanagawa and Chiba prefectures, as well as some parts of the southwestern prefecture of Kagoshima.<\/p>\n
A Level 4 Urgent Warning for flooding was also in place for the Zenpukujigawa River in Tokyo.<\/p>\n
The rain front is expected to move further north, while Tropical Storm Krovanh is likely to send warm and damp air toward it. Krovanh is currently located over waters near the southwestern prefecture of Okinawa. <\/p>\n
Rainfall of about 80 millimeters per hour is forecast in the central region of Tokai through Monday at dawn, with further downpours expected there afterward.<\/p>\n
Precipitation of more than 50 millimeters per hour is forecast for the Kanto region until shortly before Monday at noon. Similar rainfall is expected in the western region of Kinki until dawn on Monday, and in the northeastern region of Tohoku from dawn on Monday.<\/p>\n
Bands of heavy rain clouds could develop, especially over Kanto, Tokai and Tohoku on Monday, sharply raising the risk of water-related disasters. <\/p>\n
The 24-hour rainfall through Monday evening could reach 300 millimeters in Tokai, 250 millimeters in the Kanto-Koshin region, and 200 millimeters in Tohoku, Kinki and the Izu Islands.<\/p>\n
Weather officials say heavy rain could continue for the next three or four days. <\/p>\n
People are being urged to stay in safe places, such as buildings away from valleys and cliffs, when they go to bed at night.
