(AFP\/Getty)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight now, local authorities are using loudspeakers in the neighbourhood to warn people about a possible tsunami and to stay alert,\u201d Chaw Su Thwe, a Myanmar national residing in Hokkaido told the BBC. \u201cOffice workers have been allowed to leave work early.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Over 156,000 people were reported to have been evacuated across five prefectures across the country\u2019s coastline. <\/p>\n<p>Japan&#8217;s prime minister, Sanae Takaichi, said the government had set up an emergency task force \u2060and urged citizens in the affected areas to evacuate to \u200bsafety in the aftermath of the warning. <\/p>\n<p>Broadcaster \u2060NHK showed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/asia\/japan\/japan-tsunami-warning-earthquake-today-live-updates-b2960902.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ships sailing \u200cout of Hachinohe port in Hokkaido <\/a>in anticipation of the waves, as an alert reading \u201cTsunami! Evacuate!\u201d flashed across the screen to inform viewers. <\/p>\n<p>Emergency alert app NERV advised people to stay away from the coast and to avoid large bodies of water until the advisories were no longer in place. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/japan\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/de414a80-3ca4-11f1-8606-05fe34b06e1b-copy.jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Coastal areas in Japan were urged to evacuate\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/>Coastal areas in Japan were urged to evacuate (Sky News)<\/p>\n<p>The incident will trigger memories of the devastating 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, which killed 18,000 people and caused a meltdown at the Fukushima nuclear plant. <\/p>\n<p>The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said that no abnormalities had been observed at Japan\u2019s nuclear facilities following the earthquake. <\/p>\n<p>Japan is situated within the \u201cRing of Fire\u201d of volcanoes and oceanic trenches, which partly encircle the Pacific Basin.
