As first spotted by the Chinese outlet GamerSky, netizens have shared photos and videos of large digital billboards in several densely populated Tokyo districts running Sony’s “It Happens on PS5” ads with GTA 6 front and center, sitting shoulder to shoulder with the company’s own first-party heavy hitters.

The GTA 6 spots themselves aren’t new, coming from an August ad refresh that cut new footage, mostly reworked from the second trailer, into the campaign alongside exclusives like Marvel’s Wolverine and the next God of War. Now those ads are lighting up out-of-home displays in Tokyo, aimed squarely at cementing the PS5 as the place to play big AAA games in Japan.

This isn’t surprising at all when you consider what Sony has done in the lead-up to the next big Grand Theft Auto release. It’s just that the partnership has gotten bolder and more public. We covered it when it started and it has only gone harder since, with custom DualSense controllers, UI takeovers, and store prioritization.

Billboards in Tokyo are the natural next step, possibly as a precursor to its Miami takeover plans.

Sony’s GTA 6 PlayStation playbook

“Plays best on PS5” messaging

Positions the PS5 as the default place to play

PS5 UI and store takeover

Puts GTA 6 front and center on the console itself

“It Happens on PS5” commercials

Runs GTA 6 footage alongside Sony’s own exclusives

Custom DualSense controllers

Two limited GTA 6 pads, first-party-style treatment

Takes the campaign to the streets of PlayStation’s home market

This is how Sony has made the rest of the world believe that GTA 6 is best played on the PS5.

To do this in Japan is more of Sony proving a point. It is PlayStation’s home turf and one of the few markets where Xbox barely makes a mark, so pairing the biggest game on Earth with the PS5 logo on Tokyo billboards is its way of telling players across the world where to buy and play it. Nobody in Tokyo needs convincing that GTA 6 is a big deal. Sony just has to make sure the PS5 is the first thing they associate with it.

Just remember that for all the PlayStation branding, GTA 6 is still a game that will also play perfectly fine on Xbox. It is not an exclusive title, even though what Sony is doing is working quite well.

That is the whole trick, and it is working. With pre-orders already smashing records and PS5s selling out on the hype, Sony has worked out that the fastest way to sell its console in 2026 is to borrow someone else’s game. Rockstar Games built Vice City. Sony is busy making sure the whole world sees it in PlayStation blue.

Sony’s campaign to make Grand Theft Auto VI feel like a PlayStation exclusive has reached the streets of…

[3
41847,8,4553,2042,52
post-87789","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-tokyo","tag-gta-6","tag-japan","tag-playstation","tag-sony","tag-tokyo
["GET
