The report included the intention that the South Korean government has systematically discriminated against and attacked only U.S. companies. On the basis of this, it was suggested that the Korean government did not follow due process by presenting excessive fines, early morning investigations, frequent summons and data requests, and simultaneous and redundant investigations by various agencies as examples of coercive investigations. At the same time, he argues that the overall execution of the Korean government violates its obligations under the Korea-US FTA.
In addition, it is mainly about Korea’s discriminatory treatment against U.S. companies, such as dealing with past trade conflicts in the automobile sector that are not related to Coupang. It cites Coupang’s claim as it is, and the position of the Korean government and domestic regulators is omitted It is criticized for being a biased report.
Representative Kim Hyun-jung said, “The U.S. House Coupang report relies heavily on Coupang’s unilateral claims and lobbying without fully reflecting the position of the Korean government and regulators, the domestic legal system, the objective facts of the case, the Korea-U.S. FTA and international trade norms.” “The National Assembly has supplemented the government’s position and explanation of our legal system together and delivered a collection of data to communicate more balancedly with the allied parliament,” it said.
The National Assembly’s Science, Technology, Information, Broadcasting and Communications Committee is also collecting opinions from lawmakers after drafting a letter to the U.S. Congress. The letter is likely to be delivered in the name of the head of the Guard, and the format and final text are currently being coordinated with participating lawmakers.
The letter will reportedly contain regret and protest over the mention of the Korean National Assembly’s Coupang hearing as an example of political pressure in the Coupang report.
