LG CNS is drafting a blueprint for the artificial intelligence transformation (AX) of 14 airports across South Korea. The company is embarking on establishing a mid-to-long-term strategy covering everything from airport operation optimization to customer service innovation and safety management system construction, thereby expanding its business territory into the airport and aviation sector.

LG CNS announced on the 5th that it has won the “KAC AI Master Plan (ISMP) Establishment” project from the Korea Airports Corporation. This project involves devising a mid-to-long-term strategy and execution roadmap to apply artificial intelligence (AI) across the operations of 14 airports nationwide, including Gimpo, Gimhae, and Jeju.

Since being selected as a leading AI institution by South Korea’s Ministry of Economy and Finance, the Korea Airports Corporation has been pursuing a total of 50 AI innovation tasks since last year with the goal of “realizing a future airport through AI innovation.” Through this contract, LG CNS will take on the role of concretizing the corporation’s AI strategy and establishing a master plan applicable to the field.

The project scope covers the entire process, from AI strategy consulting and AI/data architecture design to AI governance establishment, Proof of Concept (PoC) for core tasks, and the formulation of execution plans for subsequent projects. LG CNS plans to prepare a phased AI adoption strategy to identify tasks applicable to actual airport operations and conduct technology verification simultaneously.

The core areas of this project can be summarized into three main categories: airport operation optimization, customer service innovation, and safety management system construction. LG CNS plans to mobilize its AX experience accumulated across various industries, including the public sector, finance, manufacturing, and logistics, along with its technological capabilities in generative AI, agentic AI, cloud, and data.

A representative service proposed is an agentic AI-based on-site safety management system. When an abnormal situation occurs within the airport, field staff record the situation via voice. An AI agent then automatically organizes this voice data to draft a report while simultaneously providing real-time guidance on response procedures for each situation. This is expected to drastically reduce the reporting burden on field staff during emergencies and establish a rapid initial response system.

Bae Min, Head of the Financial & Public Business Division (Executive Vice President) at LG CNS, stated, “This project goes beyond simple informatization strategy establishment; it is a project that designs the direction of AI transformation for South Korea’s airport industry.” He added, “Based on LG CNS’s AX capabilities, we will contribute to the Korea Airports Corporation’s implementation of an AI-based future airport model.”

LG CNS plans to use this contract win as a stepping stone to fully expand its AX business portfolio into the airport and aviation sector. This is interpreted as a strategy to secure new growth engines by extending its digital transformation experience, previously accumulated in the public, finance, manufacturing, and logistics sectors, into the aviation infrastructure domain.

Meanwhile, as this project involves integrating AI into the specialized environment of an airport, it demands a high level of technical skill and security capabilities. This is because airports are critical national infrastructure where large crowds are constantly moving and security is paramount, making the stability and reliability of AI systems particularly crucial. LG CNS plans to meet these requirements based on its cloud and data architecture design capabilities.
