Naver Webtoon’s Japanese-language service “LINE Manga” has partnered with Japan’s top mobile carrier NTT Docomo to launch the platform’s first subscription-based anime streaming service. The integration of a major telecom-operated anime service directly into a manga subscription platform’s app is an unusual move in the industry.
Naver Webtoon announced on August 5 the official launch of “dAnime Store for LINE Manga” within the LINE Manga app. Users can now directly access content from NTT Docomo’s dedicated anime subscription service “dAnime Store” through a newly added “Anime” tab in the LINE Manga app.
Operated by NTT Docomo, dAnime Store is one of Japan’s leading anime streaming platforms with approximately 4 million members. Through this partnership, LINE Manga aims to combine dAnime Store’s vast anime library with its own manga user base, delivering an integrated content experience that allows users to seamlessly move between manga and anime within a single app.
The “Anime” tab on LINE Manga offers unlimited access to more than 4,000 anime titles, ranging from the latest releases to enduring classics. The company added that it plans to continuously expand the number of available titles going forward.
This service is part of Naver Webtoon’s global strategy to expand webtoon and manga IP experiences in line with regional content consumption trends. In the Japanese market, the approach focuses on strengthening the link between manga and anime, while in South Korea the company offers short-form animation through “Cuts,” and in global markets it provides video content experiences via the “Watch” tab.
A Naver Webtoon representative said, “This collaboration represents an effort to expand webtoon and manga IP experiences tailored to how content is consumed in each region.” The representative added, “By combining Japan’s robust anime content competitiveness with our manga user base, we will deliver a new content experience where users can enjoy both manga and anime together.”
