The K10 ammunition resupply vehicle, a critical asset that automatically supplies ammunition to the K9 self-propelled howitzer, is undergoing its first performance upgrade 21 years after its development was completed. Aimed at achieving seamless integration with the next-generation K9A2 howitzer, this upgrade is drawing attention as a ‘hidden weapon’ that will elevate the export competitiveness of the K9 package to the next level.
According to the defense industry on the 5th, Hanwha Aerospace (012450) began detailed design work for the K10 performance upgrade in May, in collaboration with South Korea’s Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA), the Army, and the Defense Agency for Technology and Quality. The detailed design is scheduled to be finalized by the end of this month, after which the project will move into prototype production and developmental test evaluation. The target completion date for development is 2028, with the upgraded vehicles slated for delivery to the first unit equipped with the K9A2 for field operational testing.
The K10 is an automated, robotic armored vehicle purpose-built for ammunition resupply, designed to maximize the performance of the K9 self-propelled howitzer. Samsung Techwin, the predecessor to Hanwha Aerospace, began its development in 1998 and completed it in 2005. It transports and stores over 100 shells and more than 500 charges, connecting a transfer arm on the front of the vehicle to the ammunition rack at the rear of the K9 to supply ammunition at a rate of over 10 rounds per minute. Since the K9’s own ammunition capacity is limited to around 40 rounds, the absence of a K10 creates a critical vulnerability, forcing the howitzer to return to base once its ammunition is depleted.
The core of this upgrade is achieving a higher level of automation. The K9A2 is being developed with a fully automated turret to increase its rate of fire and reduce the crew from five to three. Crucially, while the gunner previously had to manually sort and load charges based on the target range, the K9A2 system will evolve so that an onboard computer calculates the target distance and a robotic arm determines the required number of charges and loads them automatically.
In line with this, the K10 will be separately equipped with a shell supply device and a charge separation device. The design is changing so that shells are fed into the howitzer’s turret via a shell conveyor, while charges are separated individually and supplied in the exact quantity required by the K9A2. Since the range varies depending on the number of charges, this is an essential measure to maximize the combat efficiency of the fully automated K9A2. Additionally, air conditioning and thermal imaging periscopes will be newly applied to enhance crew survivability and comfort. A Hanwha Aerospace official stated, “As it is still under development, we cannot disclose specific performance details.”
Although national funds have been invested as a government research and development project, core technologies like the charge separation device are being developed under the leadership of Hanwha Aerospace. During the initial development of the K10 in 1998, Samsung Techwin also led the effort to build an integrated system with the K9, and the production and maintenance know-how accumulated over 21 years is expected to be fully incorporated into this upgrade.
Once the K10’s performance upgrade is complete, it is expected to become a new revenue stream in its own right. Currently, 10 countries, including South Korea, operate the K9 self-propelled howitzer, and five of them—Egypt, Australia, Norway, and Romania—have also adopted the K10. The K10 has already played a decisive role in contract wins. During the 2024 Romanian self-propelled howitzer program, the K9 competed against Germany’s PzH2000. Hanwha Aerospace, needing to break the conventional arms trade practices among NATO member states, persuaded the Romanian government by highlighting the ability to operate the K10 as a package, ultimately securing a contract worth approximately 1.4 trillion won (approximately $983.4 million) for 54 K9 howitzers and 36 K10 vehicles.
The United States also succeeded in developing a similar ammunition resupply vehicle but failed to commercialize it. The judgment was that the use of expensive materials and components made it excessively costly and heavy, undermining its economic viability. With the K10 being virtually the only mass-produced system in its field, the prevailing analysis is that the upgraded K10, with its enhanced automation, will make the package deal with the K9A2 even more formidable.
A defense industry insider emphasized, “Countries that have already received deliveries could also request the new model, which is highly likely to lead to additional purchases,” adding, “This is why performance upgrade programs must be further expanded to boost exports of the K9 family.”
