LG Uplus (032640.KS) announced on the 9th that it has successfully validated ‘Edge AI’ technology, which runs artificial intelligence directly on home internet routers to autonomously detect and recover from network failures. Conducted in collaboration with global semiconductor company Broadcom, the proof-of-concept was built on the next-generation Wi-Fi 8 wireless communication standard platform. It is drawing attention for proving the feasibility of an intelligent home network where AI preemptively responds before customers perceive any drop in quality.
As services requiring ultra-low latency and high bandwidth—such as generative AI, extended reality (XR), cloud gaming, and ultra-high-definition IPTV—proliferate, maintaining a stable, uninterrupted network quality within the home has emerged as a critical challenge. Consequently, the importance of AI-based technology that can autonomously assess and optimize network conditions is growing.
The Wi-Fi 8 referenced here is not yet a finalized standard but a next-generation specification (802.11bn) currently under development by the IEEE. Aiming for Ultra High Reliability, its key differentiator from Wi-Fi 7 is a focus on securing stability rather than competing on raw speed.

LG Uplus established a collaborative framework with Broadcom for this validation. Broadcom provided a Wi-Fi 8 platform equipped with a Neural Processing Unit (NPU) that supports AI computation. LG Uplus undertook the task of lightweighting its network quality prediction AI model—previously operated on cloud servers—so it could run smoothly on a home router.
This aligns with the edge AI broadband product line Broadcom officially announced in June. Broadcom revealed a strategy to embed NPUs across its Wi-Fi 8 product line, including the ‘BCM68850,’ a 50G PON home gateway SoC with a built-in NPU, enabling AI computation to be processed on the device itself rather than in the cloud. This proof-of-concept with LG Uplus can be seen as a case demonstrating that this strategy works in a real telecom network environment.
In the test environment implemented by the two companies, the AI successfully analyzed network quality data in real time directly on the router and preemptively detected signs of failure. In situations where internet quality degradation was anticipated, it was confirmed that the AI could optimize network settings and perform automatic recovery (Self-Healing) to maintain stable service quality without interruptions or delays.
This proof-of-concept is also significant in that it expands the role of the router from a simple internet connectivity device to an AI-based intelligent quality management platform. It is a case that demonstrates the potential for routers to evolve into core equipment that autonomously analyzes and manages network status.
Shin Nam-seung, Executive Vice President of Wireless Broadband Sales at Broadcom Korea, stated, “Through this proof-of-concept, we have demonstrated that by running AI models directly on Broadcom’s Wi-Fi 8 platform, the router can be expanded into an intelligent quality management platform.” He added, “Broadcom will continue to expand cooperation with LG Uplus as a technology partner supporting next-generation home network innovation.”
Lee Jin-hyuk, Senior Vice President of LG Uplus’ Consumer Service Development Lab, said, “This proof-of-concept is a meaningful achievement that confirmed the potential of edge AI technology, which runs AI directly inside network equipment.” He added, “As we have taken the first step toward realizing an intelligent home network where AI autonomously manages the quality perceived by customers, we will expand collaboration with global technology partners to continuously advance related technologies.”
Starting with this proof-of-concept, LG Uplus plans to continuously validate and advance various technologies that allow AI to stably manage networks in a Wi-Fi 8 environment. This suggests that the future competitiveness of telecommunication services will expand beyond simple speed competition to AI-based proactive quality management. However, as noted, since the Wi-Fi 8 standard itself is still in the draft stage, additional time will be required before this technology is actually installed in commercial routers, depending on the schedule for standard finalization and chipset mass production.
