Samsung Electronics’ next-generation foldable phone, the Galaxy Z Fold 8, is capturing global consumer attention after surviving unscathed through a grueling test by a famous YouTuber known as the “destroyer.” Tech YouTuber JerryRigEverything, who boasts 10 million subscribers, torched the screen with fire and forcefully bent the device in the opposite direction of its fold — yet the phone held up, prompting him to liken it to a Marvel villain and praise it as “Thanos level.”
According to industry sources and online communities on August 10, the “Galaxy Z Fold 8 Durability Test” video released by JerryRigEverything on August 9 racked up nearly 1 million views within a single day, generating significant buzz. In the video, the YouTuber subjected the new device’s display, frame, and camera lenses to scratches with a box cutter and screwdriver, burned them with a lighter, and repeatedly folded the phone after sprinkling sand into the hinge mechanism in an extreme stress test.
The highlight was the “bend test,” which targets the most vulnerable structural weakness of foldable phones. When he applied force to break the device by bending it opposite to its folding direction, the back panel appeared to lift and the area around the internal camera seemed to shift. However, when he powered on the internal display again, the screen turned on normally and the device remained undamaged. The result was all the more astonishing given his track record of breaking Samsung’s tri-fold prototype by bending it in the opposite direction.
South Korean YouTuber “Gunggeumhagi,” who has 180,000 subscribers, also confirmed similar results in a durability test conducted five days earlier. The device, which appeared to lose power after being submerged in water, soon turned back on and displayed a perfectly functional screen. After concluding the test by striking the device with a monkey wrench, he teased that he would disassemble the product in a follow-up video. That video also surpassed 290,000 views within five days.
The secret behind this formidable durability lies in the “Flex Titanium” technology applied for the first time in the Galaxy Z Fold 8. Samsung Electronics introduced a dual-layer structure combining a titanium alloy film with a titanium plate underneath that supports the film. The alloy film, composed of vanadium, aluminum, chromium, and other elements, is processed to roughly one-third the thickness of a human hair to ensure flexibility, while the titanium plate disperses external pressure and impact to maintain a uniform display surface.
A Samsung Electronics representative explained, “Durability has been significantly improved with the two-layer titanium construction. Through ultra-precision processing and sophisticated heat treatment technology, the display module thickness has been reduced by approximately 10% compared to its predecessor, yet it can withstand prolonged use.”
However, overseas tech media outlets such as Notebookcheck have pointed out that Flex Titanium does not guarantee scratch resistance for the display, and the dust protection rating is limited to IP48, meaning it lacks full resistance against fine particle ingress. Nevertheless, the fact that the mere 4.5mm aluminum chassis remains undamaged under extreme bending pressure is being evaluated as a noteworthy technological advancement in the foldable phone market.
