Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) said on the 10th that it has partnered with Korea Railroad Corp. (Korail) to launch a “paperless ticket” service using Samsung Wallet. The feature, the first of its kind among domestic mobile boarding-pass services, lets passengers store a mobile ticket on their smartphone instead of receiving a paper ticket at a station counter.
Starting the same day, train tickets sold at Korail’s offline counters are available in Samsung Wallet as mobile tickets.
Users first give advance consent to the service in Samsung Wallet, then pay for a ticket with Samsung Wallet at a Korail station counter. Once payment is completed, the mobile ticket is automatically registered in Samsung Wallet.
Tickets purchased through Korail’s integrated application, “Korail+,” can also be stored in Samsung Wallet. Launched on the 3rd of this month, Korail+ is an integrated app that brings the rail services of Korail and SR together on a single platform. After issuing a Korail ticket on Korail+, users can select the “Add to Wallet” function to add the ticket to Samsung Wallet.

Samsung Electronics has also improved convenience during the mobile ticket process, allowing users to cancel or request refunds for tickets registered in Samsung Wallet directly within the app.
Mobile tickets stored in Samsung Wallet also link to key features of Galaxy smartphones, including the calendar and “Now Brief.” Users can be notified in advance of train departure times and manage related travel schedules in one place.
SRT tickets will also be linked to Samsung Wallet in the future. As part of the high-speed rail integration, SRT will be renamed KTX-Sancheon starting September 1, and tickets for services running in September will be available to add to Samsung Wallet.
Samsung Electronics expects the service to help reduce paper ticket use as well as improve passenger convenience. A smaller volume of physical tickets issued cuts costs incurred in producing, distributing and disposing of paper tickets, easing the environmental burden, the company said.
