Samsung Electronics’ (005930.KS) Galaxy Z Fold8 is shedding its image as a device for middle-aged men, drawing strong sales from younger consumers and women. As its buyer base broadens, global preorders have risen sharply from the previous model, prompting analysts to say foldable phones are taking hold in the mainstream.
Buyers in their teens through their 30s accounted for more than half of Galaxy Z Fold8 orders, according to domestic preorder results from Samsung.com released on the 10th. Purchases by women in that age group more than doubled from the previous model, making them a key consumer segment. Demand that had centered on large screens and productivity has expanded to younger users and women.
The main driver of that broader appeal is an improved design and portability. The Galaxy Z Fold8 is shorter and wider than its predecessor. Folded, it offers a feel comparable to a standard bar-type smartphone. Unfolded, it provides a large screen suited to watching video and using social media, raising its usefulness in everyday life.
The shift in the buyer base has translated into stronger global results. Global preorders for the Galaxy Z Fold8 rose more than 30% from the previous model, according to research firm Counterpoint Research. By country, preorders climbed 39% in South Korea and more than 20% in Europe.
Demand is also expanding in major overseas markets such as North America and Japan. U.S. preorders were more than 30% above the previous record for the Fold series. In Japan, where Apple enjoys strong preference, some models sold out on Samsung’s official online store, with sales rising among younger consumers and content creators.
An industry official said the Galaxy Z Fold8 has secured a new consumer base by improving portability and the content-consumption experience, describing it as “a trend toward establishing itself as a mainstream smartphone rather than a device for a specific group.”
