KOTRA has expanded the footprint of Korea’s defense industry by securing an additional export contract with Estonia for the Chunmoo multiple rocket launcher system. The deal, finalized just five months after the initial contract in December, reflects strong local confidence in Korean-made weapon systems whose performance has been proven even in harsh climates including extreme cold.
KOTRA signed a government-to-government (G2G) export contract with the Estonian Centre for Defence Investment (ECDI) on Tuesday for the additional supply of the Chunmoo multiple rocket launcher system. Under a G2G contract, KOTRA participates as a contracting party either on behalf of or alongside domestic companies at the request of a foreign government.
Under the agreement, Hanwha Aerospace (012450.KS) will deliver three Chunmoo launchers and related support equipment to Estonia by the end of 2027. KOTRA signed a comprehensive agreement with Estonia last December to supply the Chunmoo system on a long-term basis over the next decade, completing a first-phase contract worth approximately 300 million euros (about 500 billion won) that covered the supply of six launchers and missiles.
Estonia has operated K9 self-propelled howitzers since 2020 and is known to highly regard the durability of Korean weapon systems. The stable performance of these systems in the harsh climate of Northern Europe, adjacent to polar regions, was a decisive factor behind the additional procurement.
“This additional procurement of the multiple rocket launcher system will serve as an opportunity to elevate Estonia’s defense capabilities to the next level,” Estonian Defence Minister Hanno Pevkur said. “We will continue to expand defense cooperation with our Korean partners going forward.”
“The fact that an additional contract was concluded in such a short period reflects not only the superior performance of our weapon systems but also the Estonian government’s deep trust in Korea’s defense industry,” KOTRA President Kang Kyung-sung said. “We will continue to strengthen ‘Team Korea’ collaboration with companies, diplomatic missions, and specialized institutions, and focus our capabilities on expanding K-defense exports so that Korea can leap forward as one of the world’s top four defense powers.”
