South Korea’s military fired warning shots for the first time this year after North Korean troops crossed the Military Demarcation Line (MDL), the border dividing the two Koreas.

Several North Korean soldiers crossed the MDL on the eastern front earlier this week, prompting the South Korean military to fire warning shots in line with its operational procedures, a government source said on the 16th. The North Korean soldiers were most likely on patrol at the time of the crossing, according to the source. They retreated northward after the warning shots, and no unusual movements were detected.

It was the first time this year that the South Korean military fired warning shots in response to a North Korean MDL crossing. Under its rules of engagement, the military issues a warning broadcast when North Korean troops approach the MDL or show signs of a crossing. If North Korean troops cross the line, the military fires warning shots and takes measures to force them back.

North Korean troops crossed the MDL 17 times last year. The crossings occurred as North Korean soldiers carried out land-clearing work near the line in 2024 and 2025, part of an effort to turn the MDL into a fortified border amid Pyongyang’s stance treating the two Koreas as hostile separate states. The land-clearing work involves removing brush near the MDL to secure lines of sight and leveling the ground.

Some analysts suggest that the absence of North Korean MDL crossings this year may be because the North completed the land-clearing near the line by the end of last year.

North Korean troops have since been focused on laying tactical roads and installing fences in the cleared areas, work carried out relatively far behind the MDL. As the land-clearing has effectively ended, the view is that North Korean troops now approach the front line of the MDL less often.
