Organic light-emitting diode (OLED) televisions have overtaken mini LED models to claim the top spot in a picture-quality ranking in the global premium TV market.

In this year’s TV reviews by the technology outlet Rtings, released on the 17th, LG Electronics’ OLED G6 and Samsung Electronics’ (005930.KS) S95H tied for first place in the flagship segment with scores of 9.2.

Leading mini LED products, including Sony’s Bravia 9 II (8.8) and TCL’s QM8L (8.4), landed in the 8-point range. Recent mini LED sets have competed with OLED on picture quality by launching new RGB models touting overwhelming brightness of 10,000 nits — one nit being the brightness of a single candle.

The gap stems from the physical limits of backlight-based technology, which shines light from behind the panel, according to analysts. Mini LED sets applied more than 15,000 local dimming zones, which divide the screen into sections to control light, but could not fully eliminate the “halo effect,” in which the area around a light source whitens. OLED, by contrast, achieves a high contrast ratio because each pixel can turn its own light on and off.

In real viewing conditions, the industry says the core competitive edge in picture quality lies in suppressing light reflection and in precise contrast rather than in peak brightness alone. The global market for large OLED panels is currently led by South Korean companies such as LG Display (034220.KS), which held an 83% share last year.
