Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae recommended President Lee Jae Myung on the 18th to appoint Son Bong-ki, a senior judge at the Daegu District Court (22nd, 61) and Kim Sung-soo, a senior judge at the Seoul High Court (24th, 58th) as Supreme Court justices.
With this proposal, the process of appointing two successors of former Supreme Court Justice Roh Tae-ak, who retired on March 3, and Lee Heung-gu, who will retire on the 7th of next month, will be carried out together. Roh’s replacement has been vacant for more than five months. The Supreme Court selects one of the candidates recommended by the public by more than three times by the Supreme Court Candidate Recommendation Committee, and the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court recommends the appointment to the president. It will be appointed by the president after a parliamentary confirmation hearing and consent process. The two candidates, Son Bong-ki and Kim Sung-soo, are from Daegu and Jeollanam-do, respectively, and both are non-Wool University. In particular, Senior Judge Sohn, who was proposed to replace former Supreme Court Justice Roh, is a local judge who has been active in Daegu and Gyeongbuk for 30 years. He was the first incumbent district court chief judge to be nominated for a Supreme Court justice. It is interpreted as an attempt to diversify the composition of the Supreme Court in “a graduate of Seoul National University who has been active mainly in the metropolitan area.”
Sohn, a law graduate of Korea University, passed the bar exam in 1990 and began his career as a judge at the Daegu District Court in 1996. It is known that he is good at both theory and practice while in charge of civil and criminal affairs, housework, and bankruptcy in Daegu, Gyeongbuk, and Ulsan.
Kim, who was appointed as the successor of Supreme Court Justice Lee Heung-gu, was born in Hampyeong, Jeollanam-do and graduated from Hanyang University’s law department. After passing the bar exam in 1992, he passed the Gwangju District Court, the Seoul High Court, and the Jeju District Court. It is said that it has contributed to strengthening the judiciary’s judicial capacity by conducting job training for judicial researchers, military judges, and judicial advisors and expanding international cooperation work.
The Supreme Court is expected to fill the vacancy of the Supreme Court and speed up the Supreme Court trial. The discrepancy between Supreme Court Chief Justice Cho and Cheong Wa Dae over the appointment of Supreme Court justices is also believed to have reached a compromise through the “1+1 proposal.”
