[[B1]] A SpaceX delegation visited a Hyundai Glovis (086280) vessel equipped with Starlink, the low-Earth-orbit satellite internet service, to see the technology in operation.
[[B2]] Hyundai Glovis said on the 19th that executives, including a vice president of SpaceX’s enterprise sales division, recently boarded the car carrier Glovis Stella at Gwangyang Port in South Jeolla Province. They inspected the equipment and the ship’s onboard connectivity.
[[B3]] The visitors also met with crew members to hear their views on communication quality during ocean voyages, data transmission for work, and the ease of making video calls and using online content. The crew said that connection quality on long-haul routes and the convenience of video calls and video streaming — areas previously constrained by conventional maritime communications — had improved significantly.
[[B4]] Since January, Hyundai Glovis has been rolling out Starlink across 47 of its own vessels, including car carriers and bulk ships, and has completed installation on 45 of them. The company said the move gives it a better data-transmission environment than conventional satellite links and strengthens real-time information sharing between ships and shore-based teams.
[[B5]] The high-speed, low-latency connectivity based on low-Earth-orbit satellites supports rapid information sharing and response with land in emergencies such as bad weather, equipment faults or crew health problems. It is also used for remote technical support through real-time sharing of operational and maintenance data, and to improve operating efficiency.
[[B6]] In particular, the high-speed, high-capacity infrastructure allows operational and equipment data generated aboard ships to be collected and analyzed quickly. The company expects it to become a key foundation for expanding smart-shipping technologies such as AI-based predictive maintenance, vessel safety management and voyage optimization.
[[B7]] Through this, Hyundai Glovis plans to raise the safety and efficiency of ship operations while continuing to strengthen the digital well-being of its crews. With improved internet access, crew members can now communicate more easily with their families and make better use of online education and information.
[[B8]] Building on its Starlink-based digital communications infrastructure, Hyundai Glovis plans to provide more stable and competitive maritime transport services and expand its base of global automakers and manufacturing customers.
