South Korea’s Hanwha Engine (082740.KS) has completed a dedicated plant for mass production of 4-stroke medium-speed engines for ship power generation at its Changwon headquarters in South Gyeongsang Province, expanding its business scope.
Hanwha Engine held a completion ceremony for the medium-speed engine plant at its Changwon headquarters on the 19th, attended by approximately 200 people including CEO Kim Jong-seo, Changwon Special City Mayor Kang Ki-yoon, National Assembly member Heo Seong-moo, regional partner company representatives, and employees.
The plant, built on approximately 8,260 square meters (2,500 pyeong), features a dedicated production system capable of mass-producing 4-stroke medium-speed engines. A 4-stroke medium-speed engine operates on a cycle where the crankshaft rotates twice during the four stages of power generation—intake, compression, combustion, and exhaust—with rotational speeds ranging from 300 to 1,000 revolutions per minute. These engines are primarily used for onboard power generation.
The facility was built using reshoring investment subsidies provided by South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, South Gyeongsang Province, and Changwon City. Hanwha Engine expects the completion of this plant to contribute to job creation in the region.
Hanwha Engine has primarily supplied 2-stroke low-speed engines—used as main propulsion systems for large commercial vessels—to domestic and international shipyards. With the new medium-speed engine plant now operational, the company has expanded its production range to include 4-stroke engines for ship power generation, establishing a portfolio that spans both propulsion and power generation.
Portfolio Expansion and Enhanced Energy Solutions
Hanwha Engine plans to offer a broader range of options to shipyard and shipowner customers while expanding its stable foothold in the shipboard power generation market. In particular, the company aims to strengthen its competitiveness in hybrid propulsion and energy solutions through integration with energy storage systems (ESS).
At the completion ceremony, CEO Kim Jong-seo said, “The completion of this medium-speed engine plant is an important milestone that expands Hanwha Engine’s business scope to the next level, built on the technological capabilities and market trust we have accumulated over many years.” He added, “Going forward, we will grow into a company that provides optimal propulsion and energy solutions based on diverse technologies including 2-stroke and 4-stroke engines, as well as electric motors and hybrid propulsion systems.”

The completion of this medium-speed engine plant is viewed as a strategic turning point for Hanwha Engine, marking its shift away from a low-speed engine-centric business structure toward expansion into the shipboard power generation market. By securing a mass-production system for medium-speed engines, Hanwha Engine is expected to strengthen vertical integration of engine supply in the shipbuilding process and expand its presence in the hybrid propulsion solutions market. The company anticipates that this investment will contribute to regional job creation as well as strengthening the competitiveness of South Korea’s shipbuilding equipment industry.
