LANSING, MI—LG Energy Solution has opened its new 226-acre plant here. The $2 billion factory has a capacity to produce more than 35 gigawatt-hours annually.
The facility will produce nickel-manganese-cobalt cells for next-generation electric vehicles made at Toyota Motor Co.’s assembly facility in Georgetown, KY. It will also make lithium-iron phosphate battery cells for energy storage systems used for utility, grid-scale storage and other applications.
“LG Energy Solution Lansing will produce advanced batteries that support not only the future of mobility, but also America’s growing energy infrastructure and digital economy,” says David Kim, CEO of LG Energy Solution. “We are strengthening America’s battery ecosystem, expanding our manufacturing footprint and reaffirming our long-term commitment to the United States.”
“The state’s skilled workforce is a great fit for our high impact industry, and we expect to continue our partnership with Michigan well into the 21st century,” adds Dae-sik Choi, president of LG Energy Solution Michigan. “The jobs at this facility pay well, offer great benefits and require creativity and problem solving at all levels. Unlike many other high-tech industries, battery making creates jobs for everyone, from hourly workers to advanced degree holders.”
With the opening of its Lansing plant, LG Energy Solution now operates two facilities in Michigan. The other is located 85 miles west in Holland.
