President Lee Jae-myung on the 21st welcomed the passage of a bill sharply shortening the review period for fast-track legislation in the National Assembly, saying he was “truly glad that things will now move a bit more quickly.”
Lee made the remarks on X, formerly Twitter, after sharing a post by Rep. Lee Hoon-ki of the ruling Democratic Party announcing the bill’s passage. “Thank you for your hard work, Rep. Lee and all Democratic Party lawmakers,” the president wrote. He added that he was expressing his gratitude “together with the many citizens waiting for reforms in daily life, such as housing measures, and administrative reforms, including dealing with the aftermath of the insurrection.”
The National Assembly held a plenary session the previous day and passed the so-called “Working National Assembly Act,” a revision to the National Assembly Act that cuts the maximum review period for fast-track bills to 90 days from the current 330 days. The measure passed 153 to 81 among the 234 lawmakers present. Lawmakers of the opposition People Power Party voted against it.
Under the revision, the review period for fast-track bills is shortened to 60 days from 180 days at the standing committee stage, and to 30 days from 90 days at the Legislation and Judiciary Committee stage. The bill also moves up the timing of a floor vote, from within 60 days after referral to the first plenary session held after referral.
