BAY COUNTY, Mich. (WJRT) – Democratic Senator Elissa Slotkin and Congresswoman Kristen McDonald Rivet are blaming partisan politics for the closure of a major industrial facility in Bay County.
ABC12 reported last month when SK Siltron announced it would close its Monitor Township semiconductor facility.
The company manufactures silicon wafers for electric vehicles and pointed to significant shifts in that market as a reason for the closure, which will affect 140 employees across the Great Lakes Bay Region.
“This kind of loss isn’t just about the 140 jobs,” Slotkin said. “It’s about the statement it says about believing in our future that Michigan can grow and be a leader in new fields. Sorry we had to have this press conference. Sorry about the job loss. But I think it’s important to recognize that unless we fight for it and show up for our community, we are going to lose opportunities because of politics.”
Both Slotkin and McDonald Rivet blamed federal policies, including tariffs, energy policy decisions and the elimination of incentives, as factors that created the instability for the business.
Then-President Joe Biden attended the facility’s opening in 2022.
