Samsung Electronics announced a series of strong shareholder return policies, pushing the KOSPI closer to the 7,000-point mark. However, the concentration of semiconductor supply and demand has caused a cold wind on the KOSDAQ. The domestic stock market is showing signs of polarization again.
According to the Korea Exchange on the 21st, the KOSDAQ index plunged 4.63% from the previous trading day to close at 801.94, threatening even the 800-point level. It fell to 795.57 during the day, collapsing the 800-point level.
On the same day, KOSDAQ recorded an overall decline as foreign funds were concentrated on large semiconductor stocks and supply and demand deviated. As the secondary battery industry was directly hit, shares of Ecopro and EcoproBM fell 7.26% and 7.45%, respectively, from the previous trading day. Samsung Electronics’ stock prices were high, but even the semiconductor small manager industry could not avoid weakness. Symtech shares plunged 13.23% and Wonik IPS fell 5.27%.
On top of that, expectations for Moderna’s bio stocks also cooled quickly in a day. Moderna shares, which soared the previous day due to expectations of clinical success in the late stage of a cancer vaccine, plunged 23.55% on the 20th (local time). As a result, domestic bio and pharmaceutical stocks also showed a downward trend. Alteogen shares fell 5.74% from the previous trading day and ABL Bio fell 8.85%.
In the KOSPI, most stocks, except for large-cap stocks with the highest market capitalization, also declined.
In the stock market, 193 stocks closed higher and 683 declined. In the KOSDAQ market, only 282 stocks were on the rise, while 1,378 were on the decline.
The KOSPI index rose 5.82% in a week as the recent adjustment of large semiconductor stocks ended and rebounded. On the other hand, the mid-sized stock index and the small-sized stock index fell 3.18% and 3.13%, respectively, during the same period.
Individuals sold a net 1.1658 trillion won worth of stocks on the KOSPI alone, marking the second consecutive day of selling. As Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix have rebounded over the past two days, individuals are believed to have started profit-taking and selling. On the other hand, foreigners showed extreme focus on Samsung Electronics. Since the 12th, foreigners have net purchased Samsung Electronics worth 4.1721 trillion won and SK Hynix worth 3.4 trillion won in the last seven trading days. This ranks first and second in net foreign purchases during the same period.
Lee Jae-won, a researcher at Yuanta Securities, said, “The strategy to increase the proportion of KOSDAQ in early August was effective thanks to the return of individual supply and demand and the easing of the concentration of large stocks,” adding, “However, as the KOSPI profit estimate has continued to rise until recently and foreign funds have also been flowing into large semiconductor stocks, it is necessary to shift our attention back to the KOSPI, which is supported by profits and supply and demand, after the over-rebound short-term fall.”
