Intel Korea has applied for full membership in the Korea AI Robot Industry Association, significantly expanding its engagement with South Korea’s robotics ecosystem. As global big tech companies increasingly focus on the growth trajectory of South Korea’s robotics industry, Intel’s move is seen as an effort to strengthen ties with South Korean robot manufacturers and build a foundation for edge AI chip sales.
According to industry sources on the 23rd, Intel Korea recently submitted its full membership application to the association and is currently undergoing review. The Korea AI Robot Industry Association is South Korea’s largest private robotics organization, with Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) serving as chair company and Oh Jun-ho, head of Samsung Electronics’ Future Robotics Division, as chairman. Founded in 2003, the association currently has 415 member companies, ranging from major corporations such as Hyundai Motor (005380.KS) and LG Electronics (066570.KS) to small and mid-sized ventures including Rainbow Robotics (277810.KQ) and Girobot.
This marks only the second time a global big tech company’s Korean subsidiary has joined the association. The first was Qualcomm Korea, which is reportedly now pursuing promotion to executive member status. Intel’s membership aligns with its strategic shift from being a traditional CPU powerhouse toward expanding into the edge AI chip segment. Robots with autonomous intelligence require chips capable of running AI models without external internet connectivity. At Computex 2026 in Taiwan this June, Intel announced that its “Core Ultra Series 3” CPU had been deployed in more than 130 edge AI applications.
“Intel’s association membership and Qualcomm’s promotion to executive member are extensions of their domestic sales activities,” said a robotics industry insider. “They likely harbor expectations of expanding product sales going forward.”
Intel is not alone in deepening its engagement with South Korea’s robotics ecosystem. Nvidia will launch a robotics developer training program in Seoul starting October. The six-month program teaches humanoid robot AI model development, with South Korean startup XYZ participating. XYZ’s semi-humanoid robot “Deuce” will be used as a hands-on training platform—marking both the first time Nvidia has partnered with a South Korean robotics company on an educational initiative and the first time a South Korean-made humanoid has served as a teaching tool in an Nvidia training program.
The curriculum focuses on Nvidia’s edge AI chip “Jetson” and its robot simulation platform “Isaac Sim.” Industry observers interpret this as a strategic move to cultivate robot AI developers specialized in Nvidia products ahead of the curve.
Qualcomm is also pursuing technology collaboration with small and medium-sized enterprises, participating as a demand company in the Ministry of SMEs and Startups’ “Everyone’s Challenge” program. Qualcomm is co-developing AI robot control computers and autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) equipped with them alongside Yujin System.
The reason these big tech companies are focusing on South Korea’s robotics industry is clear. From major corporations to startups, businesses that manufacture robots directly or retrofit existing robots for specialized applications are thriving. Since each individual robot requires AI chips, the growth of the robotics industry directly translates into expanded chip sales.
The edge AI chip market, in particular, remains without a clear frontrunner. According to market research firm Global Market Insights, Nvidia—the market leader in edge AI chips as of 2024—held just 11.2% market share, with Qualcomm close behind at 9.7%. Big tech companies’ efforts to build close relationships with South Korea’s robotics ecosystem are essentially moves to secure market share in the intensifying edge AI chip competition.
