Hanwha Systems has earned the highest rating for the seventh consecutive time under CMMI (Capability Maturity Model Integration), a global benchmark for research and development (R&D) capabilities. This represents the longest-running record among South Korean companies.

Hanwha Systems announced on the 24th that it received “Level 5″—the highest rating—in the defense R&D category of the latest CMMI 3.0 certification assessment on the 21st. Since first achieving Level 5 in 2009, the company has maintained certification under the latest version for 17 years through continuous process improvement, institutionalization of quantitative management systems, and efforts to strengthen the competitiveness of developed products.

CMMI is a process maturity assessment model developed by Carnegie Mellon University’s Software Engineering Institute (SEI) at the request of the U.S. War Department (now the Department of Defense). The version 3.0 defense sector certification obtained by Hanwha Systems evaluates 19 domains and 185 items related to defense R&D processes, assigning ratings on a scale of 1 to 5 based on process maturity. The certification is valid for three years, and maintaining it requires passing a re-assessment every three years.

Hanwha Systems received outstanding evaluations for its R&D process management capabilities across all business areas currently in operation, including radar, satellites, naval combat management systems (CMS), and command, control, and communications.

CMMI Level 5 is an international standard that formally recognizes a company as possessing world-class R&D capabilities. Global defense contractors such as Lockheed Martin and Boeing frequently require CMMI certification as a mandatory condition for business partnerships or export contracts, making this certification a positive factor for Hanwha Systems’ future overseas market expansion and export growth.

A Hanwha Systems representative stated, “Maintaining the highest CMMI rating for 17 years is a result that once again demonstrates our defense R&D processes and quality management capabilities are at world-class levels.” The representative added, “Through rigorous quality management and technological innovation, we will continue to contribute to South Korea’s national security while steadily enhancing the competitiveness of K-defense in the global market.”
