“Book type” smartphones, which are spread from side to side like books, are emerging as the main focus of the foldable phone market. About 7 out of 10 foldable smartphones sold in the first half of this year were book types. Following the popularity of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 in the second half of the year, Apple is expected to enter the book-type foldable phone market, and the market is moving to a screen with a large center of gravity.
According to market research company Omdia on the 20th, the proportion of book types among global foldable smartphone shipments in the first half of this year was 69%. Samsung Electronics and Huawei accounted for 75% of the book type market.
In the second half of the year, Samsung Electronics is expected to help the growth of book types. The Galaxy Z 8 series, which Samsung Electronics pre-sold in Korea from the 28th of last month to the 3rd of this month, was 1.44 million units, the highest among Galaxy smartphones ever. Among them, the proportion of the Galaxy Z Fold 8, a book type, reached about 70%.
It is analyzed that the expansion of the consumer base of book-type foldable phones has also affected the strong sales of Fold 8. The number of female customers in their teens and 30s who purchased Fold 8 Ultra and Fold 8 from Samsung Dotcom more than doubled from their previous Fold 7.
As for the design of book-type foldable phones, ‘wide format’ is becoming a trend. The wide format is characterized by the use of a wide screen like a tablet when unfolded while reducing volume and weight when carried. Apple’s first foldable phone is also expected to be released in a wide format book type.
The foldable phone market is also expected to grow again thanks to the success of book types. Omdia predicted that global foldable phone shipments will exceed 22 million units this year, up more than 22% from last year. Shipments are expected to double from 18.2 million units last year to 36 million units in 2028.
