The Seoul Metropolitan Council’s People’s Power criticized the Lee Jae Myung government’s real estate policy and urged it to withdraw its housing supply plan in Yongsan Park. It also announced its plan to present alternatives to stabilize citizens’ housing and engage in practical legislative activities.

Seoul Metropolitan Council members of the People’s Power issued an emergency resolution in front of the city council’s main building ahead of the first plenary session of the extraordinary session on the 25th.

The 12th Seoul Metropolitan Council consisted of 80 seats from the Democratic Party of Korea and 38 seats from the People’s Power. Unlike the 11th Congress, where the power of the people was the majority, the Democratic Party of Korea secured the leadership of the Congress this time.

Regarding the results of the local elections, they said, “We deeply accept the public’s sentiment,” and added, “We will do our best to reform it to a lower position and ensure that the Seoul Metropolitan Government continues its continuity and produces the best results.”

People’s Power lawmakers defined the housing issue as a national task that cannot be put off any longer. The government repeatedly revised its policies and strengthened regulations to stabilize housing prices, but it pointed out that it has become more difficult for citizens to buy their own homes as they have lost the market’s trust.

“Young people and newlyweds are giving up their future due to a sharp drop in monthly rent and soaring housing costs, and the elderly are pushed out of their homes, reminiscent of the “modern Goryeo market,” they said. “Housing policy is not an ideology, but a reality.”

In particular, he criticized the government’s housing supply plan for Yongsan Park as a “soldering real estate measure” and demanded the complete withdrawal.

Members of the Seoul Metropolitan Council’s People’s Power claimed, “To scapegoat Yongsan Park, the last large green space left in the heart of Seoul, for tinkering with real estate measures is to take away the rights and assets of future generations.”

“We will put policies over political strife, achievements over slogans, and people’s livelihoods over ideology,” he said. “We will practice practical politics that change citizens’ lives, and be reborn as a policy party responsible for growth, balanced development, safety and welfare, and the future of young people.”

Regarding the relationship with the Seoul Metropolitan Government, Dongju Gongjeom (舟共濟), which means “crossing the river together on the same boat,” was mentioned. “We need a responsible check that presents alternatives, not opposition for opposition,” they said.
