North Korean side Pyongyang Reds RFC are recruiting players for the Autumn season and are inviting international applications through long-running organisation China Rugby Recruitment.

China Rugby Recruitment has ties to Chinese clubs Beijing Ducks and Shenzhen Pirates and has a video on their Instagram account of ex-Yokohama Canon Eagles scrum-half Faf de Klerk promoting opportunities to play and teach in China.

Pyongyang Reds RFC are looking for players in all positions and are offering a package that includes providing players with a full-time job as an English teacher and a competitive monthly salary. Flight allowance and a ‘food ration package’ is provided by the employer.

Successful applicants will play in the Pyongyang Cup and DRPK Cup and will be expected to arrive in August or September.

Applicants must hold a passport from Britain, South Africa, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Canada or America.

Ex-England wing Jonny May, who now plays for Soyaux Angoulême in France’s second division, famously had an invitation in 2017 from the North Korean Embassy to arrange a VIP tour to the country.

North Korea won six medals at the Paris 2024 Olympics, claiming silver medals in table tennis and diving as well as two bronze medals in wrestling. They completed their haul with a bronze medal in boxing and the same colour medal in diving.
