LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — LG Energy Solution has officially started production at its new battery manufacturing facility that company leaders say will play a long-term role in Michigan’s growing battery industry.

The facility sits on more than 200 acres near General Motors’ Lansing Delta Township Assembly Plant and will produce batteries for both electric vehicles and large-scale energy storage.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer attended the grand opening event and said Michigan has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in economic development and site readiness to support projects like this one.

“Nationally, our battery capacity increased 60% from 2025 to 2026,” Whitmer said. “That’s pretty incredible.”

The plant currently employs around 900 people, with that number expected to grow to roughly 1,700 once the facility reaches full-scale production. The batteries produced at the plant will be used in large-scale energy storage systems and electric vehicles, including the 2027 Toyota Highlander EV.

LG Energy Solution officials say Toyota is one of the facility’s main customers and that they remain confident in long-term demand.

“We’re looking for high energy density, affordable combination,” company representatives said at the event. “I feel very confident that LG is going to be well positioned to compete in that market.”

For Delta Township Supervisor Fonda Brewer, the impact goes beyond what is being made inside the plant. She says the township hopes the new jobs help drive future housing and development in the area.

“That’s people who will be able to live here, work here and play here,” Brewer said. “It’s going to bring great wages for them.”

LG Energy Solution reports it has invested more than $2 billion into the Lansing-area facility since 2022. Company leaders say the plant could also become a testing ground for new battery technology.

“This is also our kind of mother plant where we try new technologies,” an LG Energy Solution official said. “If we build out new chemistries, this is probably the plant we’ll try that out before we roll it out to other locations.”

LG Energy Solution has taken full ownership of the facility and says its expanding customer base gives the company confidence in the plant’s future, citing a national need to invest in energy infrastruture it says is expected to drive up energy storage demand for “quite some time.”
