Samsung isn’t waiting for you to buy a new fridge to give it a brain upgrade. The company announced Monday that it’s rolling out a major Tizen OS 10.0 software update starting this September, bringing Google Gemini-powered AI Vision and smarter Bixby voice controls to refrigerators and laundry appliances sold as far back as 2021, a rare move to extend AI features to hardware already sitting in kitchens and laundry rooms worldwide.
Samsung Electronics is betting that the next battleground for smart appliances isn’t the showroom floor, it’s the software update. The company announced today that it’s pushing a sweeping update to Tizen OS 10.0 across select refrigerators and laundry machines, starting this September, that brings AI features from its 2026 lineup to appliances that have already been sitting in customers’ homes for years.
That’s a notable departure from how the appliance industry typically operates, where new features get locked behind next year’s purchase. “Home appliances are products that consumers rely on for many years. We believe supporting them over time requires not only reliable hardware, but also software that continues to evolve,” said Jeong Seung Moon, Executive Vice President and Head of the R&D Team of the Digital Appliances Business at Samsung, in the company’s official announcement. “Through this latest regular software update, we aim to help our appliances remain useful and up to date throughout the ownership journey, enhancing the long-term value consumers receive from products they already own.”
The centerpiece of the update lands on Samsung’s Bespoke AI Refrigerator Family Hub line. Building on a rollout that first hit select U.S. models back in May, Samsung is now pushing its newest AI-powered fridge experiences into additional global markets. Refrigerators with built-in cameras and AI Vision, spanning the 21.5-inch and 32-inch Family Hub models released between 2021 and 2025, plus select 9-inch Family Hub units from 2025, will get an updated AI Vision system built with Google Gemini. In practice, that means the fridge’s ability to recognize what’s actually sitting inside it just got a lot sharper, expanding to a much wider range of fresh and packaged foods, including branded and region-specific products that earlier versions likely would have missed. Screen-based features like Now Brief and What’s for Today? round out the update, aiming to turn the fridge door into more of a personalized daily assistant than a static touchscreen.

On the laundry side, Samsung is extending its latest software experience to Bespoke AI Laundry Combo, Washer, and Dryer models released in 2024 and 2025. The headline feature here is a beefed-up Bixby, Samsung’s voice assistant, which now handles more natural, conversational requests. Ask your washer, “When will my laundry be finished?” and instead of digging through a menu, Bixby responds with something like, “Your laundry is set to finish in two hours and 25 minutes.” It’s a small thing, but it’s the kind of frictionless interaction that Samsung is clearly hoping will make its laundry lineup feel less like a machine and more like a helpful device that just gets what you’re asking. Models with 7-inch Smart Screens also get a refreshed interface, including a new Easy Mode that strips down the layout and surfaces key information without forcing users to dig through settings.
The timing is worth noting. Smart home and appliance makers, from LG to Whirlpool, have spent the past few years racing to bolt AI onto refrigerators and washers as a differentiator, but most of that innovation has been reserved for brand-new, top-of-the-line models. Samsung’s decision to push Gemini-based vision and improved Bixby controls back onto four-year-old hardware is as much a customer retention play as it is a technology upgrade. It signals to existing Samsung appliance owners that they don’t need to shell out for a new fridge just to get the latest AI food-recognition tricks, which could matter a lot in a market where appliance replacement cycles stretch a decade or more.
Samsung says the rollout will happen in phases starting this September, though the company was careful to note that actual timing, supported features, and availability will vary by product, model year, and market, so not every eligible fridge or washer will light up with these features on day one. Users will be notified through the appliance’s own screen when an update is ready to install. The bigger question now is whether this kind of retroactive AI support becomes an industry norm or stays a Samsung differentiator, and whether Google’s Gemini partnership deepens further into Samsung’s broader appliance and device ecosystem in the months ahead.
For Samsung owners, this update is a rare bit of good news in a hardware world where ‘new features’ usually means ‘buy a new product.’ By pushing Gemini-powered food recognition and smarter Bixby controls onto fridges and washers that are already years old, Samsung is making a quiet argument that software longevity matters as much as the initial spec sheet, a strategy that could reshape how much loyalty consumers show to appliance brands and how much pressure rivals feel to match that kind of long-term support.
