Samsung is reportedly planning to unveil its first AI smart glasses at Galaxy Unpacked in London on July 22, according to SamMobile yesterday. The rumored Galaxy Glasses would run Android XR with Gemini as the built-in assistant, carry a 12MP camera, speakers, and microphones, and offload all processing to a paired phone no display, no onboard compute.

Samsung has not officially confirmed the product, the July date, pricing, or its data-handling policies. What follows is based on published reporting and Google’s Android XR platform documentation.

The more interesting question is not whether Samsung can beat Apple to market. Apple’s glasses remain an unconfirmed 2027 rumor. The real question is whether a phone-tethered, display-free device that can hear and see but cannot show you anything is actually worth buying in 2026 and that question has to be answered against what people already carry in their pockets, not against products that haven’t shipped.

For someone already living in Google’s ecosystem, that depth of integration is the functional argument for choosing Galaxy over Ray-Ban. Gemini is native to Android in a way Meta AI simply is not.

The platform is also not launching into a software vacuum. Galaxy XR shipped last October with developer tools and content already in place, and Google confirmed at I/O 2025 that developers will be able to build for the Android XR glasses platform later this year. That runway matters for what the glasses will actually be able to do at launch.

The fit-and-misfit picture is worth being direct about. The privacy burden this category already carries

The regulatory context here is not theoretical. A joint investigation by Swedish newspapers Svenska Dagbladet and Göteborgs-Posten led to allegations of a significant gap between Meta’s privacy assurances for its Ray-Ban AI smart glasses and the reality of how user data is handled. Data annotators, employed by a Kenya-based subcontractor, reportedly viewed footage from the glasses including recordings from bedrooms and bathrooms as part of AI model training, with face-blurring said to have regularly failed, according to a legal analysis published by Lexology about two months ago. The UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office called the allegations “concerning” and formally wrote to Meta requesting details on UK data protection compliance. Italy’s Garante raised parallel questions; EU Parliamentary members followed. Meta maintains its privacy disclosures covered human review. That dispute has not been resolved.

This is a category problem, not just Meta’s. Smart glasses are deliberately unobtrusive that is the feature. A phone held visibly signals to bystanders that recording may be occurring. Glasses provide no equivalent notice. Data captured by an AI wearable and routed to cloud processing creates real GDPR and confidentiality exposure in ordinary situations a healthcare consultation, a client meeting, a lawyer reviewing documents without the wearer intending any harm, as Lexology noted. A well-meaning employee using an AI translation feature briefly could inadvertently route trade secrets or privileged material into an external AI system, and without enterprise controls in place, that data could be ingested and trained on. The same unobtrusive design that makes the glasses convenient also makes them a vector for unintended data capture.

Google stated at I/O 2025 that it is testing Android XR glass prototypes with trusted users specifically to ensure the product “respects privacy for you and those around you” (Google). The outward recording LED is a real concession to transparency. But Samsung’s specific data retention policies, the breakdown between on-device and cloud processing, human review practices, and enterprise controls have not been publicly disclosed. Those details not the LED are what the ICO, the Garante, and enterprise buyers in regulated sectors will ask for first. For organizations in financial services, healthcare, or legal, the risk of inadvertently routing privileged material through an external AI system is not abstract; it is a compliance question with real consequences.

Privacy is not a separate consideration from usability here. A device designed to be invisible to bystanders will succeed or fail partly on whether users trust what happens to what it captures.

The competitive story at Unpacked is Samsung and Google versus Meta, not Samsung versus Apple. Apple is 2027 background noise.
