South Korea’s LG Group has entered into a strategic partnership with Microsoft spanning AI data center infrastructure, enterprise-wide work innovation, and physical AI. LG announced on the 22nd that Koo Kwang-mo, chairman of LG Corp. (003550.KS), held a top executive meeting with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella on the 21st (local time) at Microsoft’s headquarters in Redmond, Washington, where the two sides agreed to expand cooperation.
The meeting was attended by a large contingent of LG’s core leadership, including Kwon Bong-seok, COO of LG Corp.; Ryu Jae-cheol, CEO of LG Electronics (066570.KS); Hong Beom-sik, CEO of LG Uplus (032640.KS); Hyun Shin-kyun, CEO of LG CNS; and Chung Soo-hun, president of LG Sciencepark. LG’s vision is to translate the Microsoft partnership into tangible business results by leveraging a “One LG” framework that combines the capabilities of its various affiliates.
AI Data Center Infrastructure Supply Is the Top Priority
The first area the two companies are moving to commercialize is AI data centers. As Microsoft expands its AI data center footprint across the globe, LG will explore opportunities to supply cooling, power, and IT infrastructure solutions.
In the near term, the two sides will flesh out the possibility of supplying high-capacity cooling solutions for Microsoft’s key strategic data center locations. LG Electronics already offers a portfolio of data center thermal management products, including chillers, coolant distribution units (CDUs), and air conditioning systems. By layering in LG Energy Solution’s energy storage systems (ESS) and LG CNS’s data center design, construction, and operations capabilities, LG says it can deliver integrated solutions spanning cooling, power, and IT infrastructure.
Over the medium to long term, the partnership is expected to extend to “prefab” data centers, where major equipment is manufactured off-site and assembled at the destination. This approach shortens construction timelines compared to conventional methods and allows for rapid capacity expansion in response to demand — a key advantage given the surging need for AI compute infrastructure.
AI data centers, which house large volumes of high-performance graphics processing units (GPUs), consume significantly more power and generate far more heat than conventional facilities. As a result, cooling technology and reliable power delivery have emerged as critical competitive differentiators in the data center market.
Enterprise AI Transformation and Physical AI Collaboration
LG’s internal work processes will also be overhauled based on Microsoft’s AI and cloud technologies. LG is moving to deploy the “Microsoft 365 E7 Frontier Suite,” which includes the generative AI service Copilot, to office workers worldwide. The plan is to apply AI to routine tasks such as document creation, information retrieval, and data analysis to boost productivity, while building a work environment that holistically addresses security, cost, and operational efficiency.
LG’s goal extends beyond simply distributing AI tools — the company aims to fundamentally redefine how employees work with AI and transform into an “AI-native” enterprise.
The two companies are also expanding collaboration in physical AI, which applies AI to real-world industrial settings such as manufacturing, logistics, and mobility. LG will leverage Microsoft’s high-performance cloud infrastructure to accelerate the development and training of AI models that operate in physical environments.
The two sides will also build a “Data Flywheel” system in which data generated on manufacturing floors is continuously collected and used to train AI models, with the improved models then redeployed back to the field. The objective is to create a virtuous cycle: as more field data accumulates, AI model performance improves, and the enhanced AI in turn drives greater productivity and richer data from operations.
Parallel Collaboration with Nvidia
Separate from the Microsoft partnership, LG is also advancing strategic cooperation with Nvidia to build out its AI ecosystem. LG Electronics and LG Energy Solution joined Nvidia’s “DSX Ready” program — an AI factory build-out initiative — on the same day.
LG Electronics’ high-capacity coolant distribution units and LG Energy Solution’s battery energy storage systems have been included in Nvidia’s DSX Ready product lineup. LG is participating as a key partner in the DSX AI Factory platform that Nvidia is building to integrate and optimize the entire lifecycle of next-generation AI factories, from design through construction and operation.
The Microsoft collaboration is the culmination of months of working-level discussions and executive exchanges that began in earnest at a technology event held at Microsoft’s headquarters last December. Through this partnership, LG aims to anchor its group businesses — including home appliances, HVAC, IT services, and telecommunications — around AI and expand its business-to-business (B2B) market presence.
