South Korean shipbuilders are expanding their overseas production bases into India. Following Vietnam and the Philippines, HD Hyundai is pursuing the construction of a new shipyard in India, while Samsung Heavy Industries is seeking to secure a production foothold through cooperation with a local shipyard.
According to the shipbuilding industry on the 27th, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering recently dispatched working-level officials to Tamil Nadu in southern India to inspect the proposed site of a new shipyard in the Thoothukudi area. The officials reportedly discussed the project schedule, incentives and detailed plans with local government and port officials. The new shipyard is targeting an annual construction capacity of 2.5 million GT (gross tonnage), and is expected to create about 15,000 direct jobs once fully operational.
The Tamil Nadu government is also supporting the project. In June, Keerthana Sampath, the state’s industry minister, visited HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ Ulsan Shipyard to discuss cooperation, making it her first overseas trip since taking office.
Kisun Chung, chairman of HD Hyundai, is also personally overseeing the India project. In January, he attended the “Global Energy Leaders Roundtable” hosted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi, where he discussed ways to expand cooperation in shipbuilding with Indian government officials.
Samsung Heavy Industries is targeting the Indian market through cooperation with a local shipyard. Its partner, Swan Shipyard, has India’s largest dry dock. Through the partnership, Samsung Heavy Industries plans to establish a production foothold in India. India has unveiled a long-term maritime strategy to become one of the world’s five leading shipbuilding powers by 2047 and approved a shipbuilding industry support package worth about 700 billion rupees (approximately 10 trillion won) last year.
